Mechanical Interlocking - How to learn the Lost Black Art?

A relocked relocked Saxby Duplex. Leyton put one of their finest fabricated trays on possibly before the explosion. We have put an LNER standard tray on as the Leyton tray would need modifications to take mechanical sequential.

Could you not have mounted the tray a bit further back Richard? That looks very close to the frame. Ours at Littleport sits back further and is much easier to work on...

I’m looking forward to the locking fitters coming and servicing our trays. We’ll be swapped over to B tray again, with A tray being overhauled. It’s good fun with the fitters about, plenty of bacon butties!

Thought it would be a 1888 Duplex, the only locking frame I recall where the lever runs along the centre line of its floorplate.

The H&BRly had several 1888 Duplex locking frames, three of them had "Push and Pull" levers and one of these also had a box of No17 locking added for the Conditional locking.

Looking at this frame I think it was second hand when it was installed in Soham. It was a 35 lever frame in that box shortened to 10 by BR in the eighties. We have one quadrant stamped 52.


The frame was damaged by the explosion and riveted repairs are present in the uprights. It is possible other damage was repaired by replacement parts held in store.

Where do you get the locks from? I’m guessing that they must still be manufactured as they can’t all be secondhand in use on the big railways frames, can they?

Tappets aren't normally too difficult provided you can use stock sizes of steel.  When we converted the Holesmouth Jcn frame for Tyseley all the tappets were new and cut to suit the new dog chart.  the nibs were mostly recovered from the old locking but some replacements were needed and where we couldn't get them from the WR S&T we had new ones made.  The biggest problem we had was getting circuit controllers, electric locks were no problem but we needed a couple of circuit con trollers and it took a lot of delving to find a good one.
