Building Scalescenes Canal Wharf Layout in 0 gauge, Track Planning?

None of the steps I list are particularly difficult in themselves I think.  The most stressful would be the transfers.  Anyway my approach is the same as when I follow a recipe for cooking.  I tend to delete or substitute according to what I have in and what I like.

  • brossard changed the title to Building Scalescenes Canal Wharf Layout in 0 gauge, Yard Office Kit

Browsing through the supplier listing of the BRMNA site a couple of weeks ago, I came across a downloadable building kit supplier:  https://www.3dk.ca/

The buildings look attractive so I thought I'd give one a go.  I chose the yard office OO-16.  At 2.50 you can't really go wrong.  So, as usual I made it 0 gauge by blowing everything up by 175%.

Here is what I got:

P1010001.JPG.b43eecd9fef3b76e7fcb1b7f1ed844f9.JPG

P1010004-001.JPG.adb089896964fe25f05314538b84a838.JPG

It came out quite well.  Roof tiles are Scalescenes printed onto self adhesive address label.

Gutters are Evergreen strip and half round (0.125").

Downspouts are brass tube* with brackets soldered on.

*Rod is better because the tube collapses when bent.  I didn't have the right rod so I inserted wire in the tube which mostly stopped the collapsing.

I made the windows by layering 0.020 x 0.040" Evergreen in a jig.

I'm not totally crazy about the corner treatment.  There are foldover patches in the kit but the bricks were way out when I put them on.  Maybe my carelessness.  I decided to remove the patches (carefully!) and take sections from reprinted walls in hopes that the bricks would line up better.  They do, sort of, but are far from perfect.   Another one of those things that you can't tell when riding past on a bike.

Very similar to Scalescenes in design.   Fairly difficult to execute I found but not really more than Scalescenes.

Another good downloadable kit source.  :locomotive:

Indeed yes but I haven't done that.  A further look at the site reveals the availability of "textured" sheets for download so I can solve the corner problem with that.

Also, there are a number of videos in the Blog section.

  • brossard changed the title to Building Scalescenes Canal Wharf Layout in 0 gauge, Intermediate Bridge

I have some progress to report today.  I've been working on this bridge for probably 2 weeks on and off.  My first arched bridge was a disaster so I made a second.

P1010002-002.JPG.15c4f87d0d7a13e95d9939e21f68f3ca.JPG

The kit supplies parts for a low relief bridge.  I fleshed it out using parts from the R011 Arched Bridge kit.  The span girders are made from plastic strip and textured with Archer rivets.

Where I needed extra brick, TX24 Dark Brown brick is a good match.

P1010003-002.JPG.f91b6d3a515de1710961927ba507b7f1.JPG

Roadway is taken from T034.  I need to work out how to disguise the ends.

The interface between bridge and building at the back needs work.  There will need to be a short extension of the bridge to where the backscene will be.

Now that the bridge is done, I know how wide the layout will be.

  • brossard changed the title to Building Scalescenes Canal Wharf Layout in 0 gauge, Structure C Modification

Another job done today, I modified the end building (Structure C) by reducing the width of the center support by ~ 18mm.  The issue I noticed some time ago was that while the original kit seems to accomodate two tracks, my build wouldn't.

LY02_Gallery03.jpg.bf0ef4964615b6444a99aeedbad2d8f7.jpg

I think one of the reasons for that is the track in the pic above is 00 so essentially narrow gauge.  0 gauge track is near as makes no difference to scale (OK 4' 6").

Here is the building now:

P1010004-002.JPG.0d584ae6ab231ff4c25dc0bbe0ba2d84.JPG

Still tight but that's what low clearance signs are for.  The doorway width is maintained.

I want to use actual cobblestones.  My efforts at finding suitable ones have come to nought so far.  The Slaters products are unsatisfying.  Phil at Intentio says he has some so I will contact him.

Hi John, not sure if these will work for you?

Those look very good Phil.  However, I obtained some cast resin products, sorry.  Even these won't exactly fit the bill since I will need turnout infills.  I plan to scribe these in plastic card.

I think I can say the bridge is done:

P1010007-001.JPG.e58efcc8b8551805fc0eaea403dd0345.JPG

Main job over the last few days was to construct the extension that joins to the building and extends to where the backscene will be.

  • brossard changed the title to Building Scalescenes Canal Wharf Layout in 0 gauge, Track Planning?

Now, time to see what the track plan might look like.  I plonked down some track and Peco templates to get an idea:

P1010009.JPG.dc6e058e1b1e2d6b215c05a78d8e909e.JPG

P1010008-001.JPG.8ce772eade38eea8db7197bc2b7f219d.JPG

Opening out the passage way worked well.  The track spacing is on the money.  I am envisioning a 2' long board addition that would include a sector plate for repositioning locos from one track to the other.

I have a notion that there should be a crossover for the run round.  Alternatively this could be accomplished by a sector plate upstream.  Any other ideas to maximize operational interest?

The black line delineates board width at 18".  Canal would continue on to this board with scope for a butty boat or two.

BTW, turnouts are based on Peco 00 Small radius.  I blew up the template by 199% to compensate for the wrong gauge.

P1010010-001.JPG.f50128c656eba4468a33505399140060.JPG

(I can't find this pic)

As suggested by the printed mockup, a lot of the track will be covered over.

Tooth sucking and navel gazing phase now.

John,

You can download 0 Gauge templates direct from their website if needs be.

They do a 3ft4 radius. I have them installed on W C Boggs. That's the good news. The bad news is they are to tight for anything bigger than a 16ft long wagon and a small close wheel base loco. A terrier will go through and shunt but my midland 1F doesn't like them.

If you are going to bury  the track you could use markway they do 4ft and 5ft points but they are on copper clad sleepers

Hi Marc, are you referring to set track?  I haven't seen templates for these.  In any event my plan is to build the turnouts myself.  I have done that with my large layout.

Boggs looks like a neat layout.

Thanks

Hi John, Yes I was the templates are available on the tower website. I'm going to build my own points on the next layout. Just trying to find a small prototype but I only have a year to have it built.

Thanks Marc, never thought to look there.  I'll have to print one off and do a comparison.  However, if, as you say a loco like a Jinty has difficulty, they won't be a lot of use.

Hi John,

I positively love this project! The scene is perfect, and gives the impression of a crowded quayside without looking like you tried to fit too much in the space. These small layouts really are amazing, and you've done it all so well here.

Well, thanks so much Amanda.  The kit really caught my eye when I first saw it, so I felt I had to do something with it.

John Wiffen's designs are superb so, by using his expertise, half the work is done for you.

The way to keep layouts on the small side is to just have freight operation.

There is another kit:

https://scalescenes.com/product/ly01-industrial-boxfile-layout/

This would be cool too and I bought it.  However, first things first.

Following on from what Marc said, I did a comparison with the Peco set track turnout and my small radius turnout:

P1010012.JPG.265bd980a94ac5f4ff9b72e26ec1df1f.JPG

Set track on the left.  Radius is obviously a lot smaller than the one I cobbled up.

Marc said his 1F doesn't like the Set Track.  Can someone with experience of these advise as to which locos are comfortable?  I have a Dapol Jinty and Cl 08.

As I envisage it, motive power for the layout will consist of the Dapol Sentinel, Terrier and the yet to be produced, B4.  However, I don't want to restrict the route unnecessarily.

The locos I have had round them are Dapol terrier, peckett 0-4-0st, sentinel, NER H 0-4-0T, NER H1 0-6-0CT, NER H2 0-6-0T and a midland BEL. No problems with them without the automatic couplings, with them different kettle of fish.
