Popular Post 33C
A friend of mine who is retired and short of money/space since moving, was thinking of getting back into railway modelling and it got me thinking. What can you do with nothing?! We had discussed using the cheap, battery operated train sets you can find in discount shops/boot sales, usually under a Fiver or even less, taking the motor/chassis as is, and adding cereal packet cardboard bodies to same,as well as the very, toy stock and running them in the ( small! ) garden he has. Cut to 2 weeks later and we have a brick-works diesel and three skips (TT?)made from a "Train set in a tin" and successfully run in my planter/Quarry!, and a Darjeeling B class and coaches (0/16.5) from a "CLASSIC" train set, both found in charity shop for a pound each! Paint i had . Total cost for all was £3 (£1 for UHU from Pou**l*nd). Now i'm looking to go cheaper.... 16 2

cypherman
Hi all, You cannot get cheaper than free. This black 5 cost me nothing as it all came from various scrap boxes I have. I still have a BR green Black 5 body that I would like to find a home for. But alas I cannot find the matching tender body to go with it. TangoOscarMike
I didn't like the thread title when I first read it: Get creative? How dare you? We're all creative here, thank you very much! Clearly I was wrong. Shame on me.
33C
Got the train set wagons (see first pic) used and abused into some typical Darjeeling rolling stock by basically slicing the sides off the chassis and moving them out with dummy framework under and end strapping. No weight in them at all 'coz i don't know how powerful the battery loco will be.............i have since seen 2 photo's of one of these B class loco's streamlined! Could be a project for the second "Train set in a tin" i have............. Lower two pics show everything in red oxide, which is a pretty good match for the period i've modelled. cypherman
Hi all, Well again I have an engine that is free. Another one from my scrap box. The back story for this engine is that it is 1942,The war is at it's worst and the railways are running on empty. The government have asked for ideas from the railway companies to try and increase engine numbers. This is what they came up with. GWR released some spare hall chassis and tender chassis for use. LMS sorted out the boilers, cabs and tender bodies and above frame items. Southern were again left out. LNER were unavailable for comment....... So this is what they built and survived into BR days. That's my excuse anyway. In reality it is Hornby Hall chassis, Black 5 body and King class tender chassis with a Mainline Jubilee tender. Lower the running plate at rear of cylinders, mod the cab slightly and add a Truro tender type body and you have a Grange..ish....... Yankee
Another almost freebee . Here’s a near 40 year old model I bought for my kids back in about 1982. Thought I’d have a go at some weathering and detailing, had nothing to lose. No Airbrush, just paint and powers. Did a quick overhaul, without splitting the chassis, cleaned armature through the brush holes with “N” gauge fibreglass brush. Wish some of my new purchases ran as well. Bit out of place for Pine Road, https://urlzr.mp/yqb but handling the SMP track work and points fine. There are bargains out there.
