3x PRMRP TTA Tanks Build

That's impressive. 

 

The bit on my 75w iron is getting down to the unusable stage but I can't get a replacement as they are no longer made. Mine is a Litesold and I thought I bought a spare back in the day but seemingly not. As you say you need maximum heat for minimum time.  I ordered a new variable temp iron but the tips supplied are really small. Where did you get this brute from?

 

Not that the missus would sanction yet another soldering iron!  I already have about 15 of them of various sorts and she knows it!

I got this from CPC. The Weller station was OK but the tips were too big for delicate work. This one has quite a few bits available from less than a mill to 4mm+. I've had a quick go with some small brake etches on a couple of Slater's vanwides and the 'flash' of solder was instant.

I'm continuing to concentrate on track building so i can run the kits I've done (and will be doing) when the weather warms up. I've decided on a track plan and topic so i can make good progress on the turnouts required. 

Here's the first 2 of 8, a crossover that forms part of a junction. Due to restricted width (14ft), 6 turnouts will be curved as will most of the track. 

 

These are built with C switches (homemade) and 8:1 Vees (homemade). The whole thing is being built on a purpose made 4x2 12mm ply base.

First formation finished bar the wing rails. Really pleased with this. Next turnouts should be easier now i've had the experience of this build:

The TTA was used to test the run through as it has a decent wheelbase. The turnouts will be operated via wire in tube connected to a slide switch for polarity changing. 

The tie bars will be fashioned from 2mm copper clad strip.

Two more turnouts completed these are both straight C8s, one L/H one R/H. 

 

The sense of scale can be gleaned from a platelayer's viewpoint:

 

The lefthand will complete the junction layout and the righthand will be a yard point in a factory siding.

Back to the tanks. 

With the cold snap i've been ferriting away at the TTA's. 

I've got them to a point where i need to fit buffers, drawgear, lamp irons, and the tanks. 

The tanks need the walkways fitting (thin complex folds!) and then the end platforms and steps. Everything needs a good clean up tok prior to painting:

Brilliant Cliff. Thanks for sharing. 

I really enjoy building these kits. The Easy-Build 101 really captures the look of the real thing. Superb layout by the way. 

I'm not planning to move the 108 on (yet...). I'm hoping to get another 101 kit this year and i'm looking at possibly doing  a 111 with it.
