It was well worth watching, thanks for your effort Martin.

I had no particular want, or need, to see anything in particular but just watched see what the software "could do".

I think the biggest hurdle to learning Templot, is that you really need to know track nomenclature, form and function, before you can use Templot.

Martin did say he would post the video after editing.

Yes I will be posting recordings as I did before. Yes, there will be more, but first I need to do something about the video buffering which caused problems for several viewers. More info:

Hi Martin,

Yes, the video issue was a problem.

I had a 'second-ish' of video repeated every 12 to 16 seconds.

Quite annoying unless a pertinent bit was being repeated! So I kept on with it and quite forgot about it until now!.

Thanks again,

Kev.

I have now discovered that the Twitch web site provides all the streaming functions needed for the live Templot demo sessions, and what's more it is free. :) I wish I had known about it earlier.

To test it out I did a demo session on Saturday, the recording of which is available on Twitch for the next 14 days. It covers making a crossover between non-concentric tracks, and an explanation of the control template and stored background templates.

More info and a link to watch it here:

but remember, you have only 14 days.

And now also here: https://85a.uk/templot/companion/live_screen_archive.php

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the live stream. But I have just spent the last 1.5 hours watching the recording, really enjoyed it and hope to see more, but I realise it does take up time doing them.

If I make a few comments from watching the recordings.

Firstly I enjoyed the fact its not edited, the pace I found gave me time to consider what you are saying.

Secondly I now understand your thinking behind, Make control, Background and Box. So I found that part of the stream very informative.

I liked the fact that you covered information for the more experienced and beginner. Even as a beginner you are learning something by just watching.

So going forward if you do not mind, I would like an explanation behind Pegs /Align tools at some point.

I was slightly worried that the demo only lasts 14days on the Twitch website. As I am sure in a couple of months time I might want to watch it again.

Again thank you. I feel with more videos like this, more people will feel confident in using Templot which will be a great legacy for all you years of effort.

Ian

Thanks Ian. I do have a separate recording here which I could upload later if anyone wants to see it all again. It's more likely that I would use shorter clips out of it for separate videos.

There are some 20-minute clips from a previous live demo at: https://85a.uk/templot/companion/live_screen_archive.php

Now that I have hopefully resolved the previous stream buffering and image quality issues, I can think about doing these live demos more often. I will do something about pegs and the align tools next time.

Several folks have said they like the way I go slowly, forget what I'm doing, and make mistakes. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Martin

I don't post very often but after watching your tutorial using an NLS 50" map this morning I felt I had to write and say thankyou.

I had a shot at using Templot about 8 years ago when I was planning my Radstock West [GWR] layout but impatience in learning the software saw me abandon Templot and make it up as I went along using an NLS map overlaid by my baseboards ….. all very unscientific.

Building the EM track for Radstock was a joy and was completed a few years ago but the layout itself is nowhere near finished so the likelihood of using Templot in 'anger' is unlikely. However I'd like to applaud your commitment to the cause and say I've spent a couple of hours watching the online footage today and it looks very much more user friendly to me, but I put that down to your guiding vocals. I'd certainly use it if I was starting afresh today.

It may be a personal thing but I'd much prefer to hear you explaining what you are doing with some background on the technicals, than watch an arrow moving around the screen. I think you've also referred to errors you've made as you've gone along with the streaming. That becomes apart of the learning for us all so my vote goes for visuals supported by vocals and please don't cut out the 'errors'.

I'll be watching out for the next episode of Templot.

Many thanks

Doug

...because what you are doing, (and we novices are incapable of), is recovering the situation - and is especially useful when you give a little explanation on how you just did it.

This is exactly why your little mistakes are so valuable. Real world experience.

Thanks,

Kev.

Learning how to work your way out or back from an error is a very valuable piece of knowledge. It is 'Relatively' easy to do something if you don't make any errors or "get stuck" but having the means to move past an error is the difference between wanting to learn more or giving up in frustration. So as others have said, please leave in those sections where you recover from an error. You are amazingly generous with your time and skills, thank you for doing these tutorials.

Thanks for the comments.

Last Saturday's live session is now in the archive, labelled Demo 001:

https://85a.uk/templot/companion/live_screen_archive.php

and will remain there indefinitely.

But unlike the first few clips I did, I won't be cleaning up the recordings or adding any title cards, etc. With the size of files involved it just takes too long. They will be raw recordings exactly as broadcast. Folks seem to prefer them that way. :)

cheers,

Martin.
