wiggoforgold
I'm building a model of the ex GWR signal box at Yelverton. There was a similar box at Wrangaton, now preserved at Kidderminster. What did the stove in these boxes look like, and how did the flue from the stove enter the chimney? The boxes have a brick chimney stack in the centre of the rear wall - did the chimney breast project in to the cabin? Thanks in anticipation. Alex. Tim V
Although I've been there several times, the Wrangaton box has never been open. However, the box at Drws-y-nant was similar, a couple of pictures of that. 5
wiggoforgold
Thanks Tim. Is that a toilet behind the wooden screen by the door? Alex
Tim V
Yes, there's normally a toilet there.
David Bigcheeseplant
This is the back of Loudwater box a similar GWR type box, I think all these boxes had a proper fireplace rater than a stove and pipe through the roof. Also in most cases the brickwork was totally blue brick. 3
RMweb Gold ikcdab Posted September 27, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 27, 2020 If there is a brick chimney then that must be resting on a normal brick fireplace. The stove then was placed in the fireplace with the stovepipe gong up the chimney. If no brick chimney (later boxes, 1910s onwards) then the're was no fireplace and the stovepipe just went out through the roof. 1

Agree. Blue engineering bricks were only used where bricks might be subjected to knocks or damage. Hence around the base of structures or corners. Hard Staffordshire blues are impervious to water so sometimes used in footings as dampproofing. Ian
Tim V
Lacking a colour picture, I painted my box with blue bricks, because most of the type 5 boxes I'd seen were in that colour brick. Then I found a colour picture ...
Tim V
And then I remembered the box at Llanuwchlyn is the same!
wiggoforgold
Construction of the signal box is underway. Thanks for the pictures of the interior pictures which are helping me with my model. Alex Edited November 21, 2020 by wiggoforgold
