White Coal Wagons 1970's

Hi there,

When I saw the thread title I thought it may be a 16-tonner that had been painted with too thin a coat of paint, and had bleached in the daylight.  On looking at the photo, that really does look to be white.  I had a quick look at the colour photos in a couple of my books, but nothing that light.  I'm now curious.

Regards,

Alex.

There was ONE batch of 16-tonners built with alloy bodies which would have looked white if - as I presume they were - they were left unpainted .......................................... unfortunately this is obviously NOT one of those camera-shy beasts.

Wagon paintshop grey varied quite a bit and photo taken with an automatic light reading for the general scene, where this particular wagon is picked out by very bright sunlight and has thus been overexposed would produce this result.  It's grey, the normal colour for a 21t unfitted hopper.

Unpainted aluminium needs overexposing to look white in a photo as well; look at the 'finish' of unpainted LUL stock, a matt light grey begging for graffiti.

Photo looks like it has been over-sharpened in post processing. I wouldn't rely on the reproduction on this example.

Yes, also look at the whiteness of those loose sleepers on the left

Some of the late build 24.5 ton hoppers had very light grey repaints from the late '70s. There's no reason why some 21 ton hoppers did not get the same treatment.

From Paul Bartlett's site:

Yes I also have several near white 21t hoppers, but they don't have the grey solebar (that I could find). But other wagons do have the grey solebar - rebodied mineral as an example https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brmineralweld/efe7fab4  and BR grey was often near white - as with the MDO rebodies where the white end door stripe shows up against a slightly darker body colour https://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/mdorebuiltrenumber/e15debae9

BR grey is a very variable colour, as was the wagon red.
