Odd four vent van

Seen at Norden on 11.09, an SR four vent van.

 

Can't find any reference to it, any ideas?

Hi Jack,

 

There's an older photo of this van online, with a comment that it formed part of a cafe facility along with another wagon and a coach.  Could the additional ventilation been to help with cold storage of food?

Those extra vent are certainly not 'authentic' ........ would be interesting to see whether they're matched at the other end.

The vents have been on it for decades, certainly before its current use as a buffet store. About 20 years ago my only weekend of practical preservation work at Swanage was to paint the other side of this van.

Probably done in departmental use. Maybe it was in use as a generator van or something similar.

Doesn't say when, but notes that the extra pair of vents were later additions.

Googling s49445 on images brings up a picture of the other end - it matches with extra vents. You can tell it's the other end as the brake lever is different each side.

According to the 1982 / 1983 edition of Departmental Coaching Stock ( 1, Southern Region ) ADS1459 was an Outdoor Machinery Department Generator Van - hence the vents ! ( ASD1459 worked with former SECR PMV - Staff & Tool Van - ADS1035 : this was preserved at the K&ESR but is now at the Bluebell.)
