Regarding the Republicans and Donald, there is another scenario in that given that he is no spring chicken and has a life style that is tending towards a shorter rather than linger life span, the Republicans may well be hoping that he will be physically unable to run the race in 2024.

I gave you a Craftsmanship/clever reaction on the basis that "linger life span" was deliberate.

A airport worker and their family in Auckland have just tested positive for COVID-19

The worker worked for the airport laundry services and had no face to face contact with people returning to New Zealand so our Health Dept are concerned that this looks to have been contaminated surface virus transmission.  These have happened inside quarantine facilities before today, but this would be the first one outside and 'in the wild' as it were.

Sounds a lot like some of the surface contact transmissions that we've had here inside our own quarantine hotels.

People are already commenting that we should close our borders to returning New Zealand citizens, but I don't think they realise the implications of effectively making NZ citizens stateless persons.

The UK Government's quarantine scheme is, to my mind, a joke and just a token gesture (to the travel industry?).  Why only certain countries? Why are they going to be allowed to wander about the corridors and go out for exercise?  That's not quarantine!!

The Scottish Government have made it a requirement coming into Scotland from any country, but the problem then is those coming in to English airports from non-red list countries and then travelling on to Scotland, either by air or overland.  Checkpoints at the Border? Not practical as there are so many minor roads.  I even know of one road where the border runs along the middle of the road at one point!  A friend goes along it on his cycle rides.  He can only go anti-clockwise round the circuit he does as that keeps him on the Scottish side!

Forgive me for saying this Jim, but I was largely unaware that the Uk actually had one.  The Uk border is in effect completely porous which has to be a major reason why it's been impossible for the Uk government to get a lid on community transmissions of the virus.  You can lock down all you like, but if infected people are still crossing your borders the Uk government is f@rting against thunder (as a friend of mine used to colourfully say).

Have you included that rather splendid little suspension bridge over the Tweed near Norham?

I assume the reivers are all furloughed.

In contrast to New Zealand, the population is large enough and sufficiently dense (in more than one sense) that even with hermetically sealed borders, any lockdown can at best only reduce the rate of transmission.

Yes that's true enough Stephen we are very fortunate with our smaller population, but even so better control of the Uk's borders would have to had made a difference; - especially during those first critical months of 2020 before COVID-19 could have gained a foothold in the Uk.  BUT I'm most probably telling you what you already know.

It comes into force tomorrow (or for where you are, probably today, 15th).  Too little and too late - AGAIN!

I don't know if you get network wide Civil Defense cellphone messages in the Uk

Civil Defence (note the 'c') was disbanded in the UK so long ago that you can't even get the very good CD-surplus greatcoats from down-market camping shops any more., which is a sad loss to student fashion. I don't think cellular radio had been invented when last it was around.

We've had a couple of lucky breaks with the scary UK strain so far, hopefully Melbourne is another one.

There was that hotel worker in Perth who caught it in a quarantine hotel - they still haven't found out how yet, since he had no contact with any positive guests. He was loose in the community travelling around and socialising for 6 days or something before he was diagnosed. Queue mass panic and a 5 day lockdown of most of the  populated bits of WA,  but not a single new case popped up, not in the 1200 or so identified close and casual contacts, not even his 3 housemates who had daily contact with him..

Similar in Brisbane, hotel worker gets infected, does socialising stuff in the week or so before being  diagnosed, lockdown of Brisbane,  only her partner catches it.

Australians -  maybe we actually are too slow to catch a cold.

Or covid in this case..

Of course that nonsense happened in Perth :mocking_mini:

Unfortunately someone else seems to be quickly learning to push the right buttons, make sh1t up and rev  up the audience just like his dad can... for instance check out the Trump Jr footage at the Jan 6 incitement  rally...

I think they have recognised the presidency as being the ultimate opportunity to indulge in their  grifting, nepotism  and corruption and are in it for the long haul.

EDIT -

Actually, given that Trump blames Mike Pence for not delivering the presidency for him this time, do not be surprised if  in 2024 we are  faced with President Trump, and Vice President Trump Jr, - or Ivanka. They won't let him down!

(Unless in the meantime the FBI, CIA, DHS, IRS or some other acronym can find something that sticks..)

Um...... I can't spell for toffee.  Our Civil Defence has a 'c' as well.

During the first big lockdown we had here due to a visit from a plague ship it was the local Civil Defence groups working in with NGOs, Age Concern and the NZ Defence Force that made sure vulnerable people and elderly who might be living alone had food and were able to access essential medication & etc.  During the first few days when the shamefully greedy were packing their spare rooms full of toilet paper as well as trying to clear everything off supermarket shelves and abusing supermarket staff in the process I was very worried and made sure I had the Civil Defence contact numbers.  Fortunately the Police were quick to work in with the supermarkets and the worst of these lowlives ended up getting trespass orders or dragged before the courts.

I know I shouldn't laugh but the moment our state government announced the snap 5 day shut down the supermarkets were stripped of toilet paper. It seems to be a genetic feature of human beings. Personally I stocked up on beer, but that's a daily occurrence and isn't COVID related. :D

Somewhat to my embarrassment, I've stockpiled loo roll.

A week ago last Thursday, we were down to our last half-dozen; I had it on my list and was sure I'd bought a 24-pack. But come last Thursday, we were down to our last three rolls, so I put it on the list again, thinking I must have forgotten to get any the previous week.

When I opened up the back of the car to load up the weeks shopping, there was the previous week's 24-pack...

So now we're good until late May, by my reckoning - longer if No. 1 Son can go back to Durham after Easter.

It is actually allowed for in the rules in extreme circumstances, and the fact that it happened made me wonder whether things are graver than we’ve been told.

(I’ve spoken against the concept of royalty plenty of times, but they are human beings after all, and a very sick dad is a very sick dad)

One rule for them ...

I think there is a whole host of rules you plebs have to follow that the Royals can just ignore, like not needing a drivers licence or a passport, or the fact that the Queen at least can't get arrested, those are just a couple I can think of.

After all, what is the  point of the royal family if they have to act like everyone else but just  get to live in a big house for free, now that they can't do all the old-school royal  stuff like chopping off their wives heads and so on?

Personally I hope HRH pulls through since he's one of only 3 Knights Of Australia, an award created by mad monk Tony Abbott before his party realised he was insane,  kicked him out of the PM's role and suggested that given his skills maybe the UK government  would find a job for him.

Regretfully, I know of friends etc that have been prevented from going to see loved ones for a possible last time. by police on road and care home staff

I that turns out to be an ironic, rather than prescient, choice of word...

Do you mean, ..... just done a search of the BBC news to find no updates. However, if so my condolences to all concerned

In the news today .... well, in the Law Society Gazette:

"A misunderstanding of drill music as an incitement to violence is contributing to the over-representation of minority ethnic youths in the criminal justice system, a law reform think-tank says today."

I've obviously been misunderstanding drill music for years.
