I am concerned/angry/disturbed at the current Home Secretary's instructions to the Border Force seagoing patrol vessels in the English Channel with regard to vessels transporting attempted immigrants.

"Members of Border Force are being given special training to handle migrant boats, but would only deploy the “pushback” tactics when deemed practical and safe to do so."

So I would expect to see the first tragedy, resulting from the Home Secretaries newly sanctioned policy any day now.

Does anyone have experience of initiating such a petition?

There is almost certainly such a petition.

No; surprisingly, couldn't find one: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions?state=open

To start a petition, go here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/check

I see from Heritage Railway (No.522) that the Great Musgrave bridge infill is being considered for removal.

This was the subject of a Parliamentary Petition (mentioned here, which I duly signed.

Does anyone have experience of initiating such a petition?

Indeed, and it is often forgotten these days that the emerging TUC in the mid-late 19th century considered that the  working class might be better represented by the protectionist Tories  rather than the free-trade middle class Liberals and there was surprisingly little common ground between the unions and the Social Democratic Federation, etc (I'm obviously simplifying things a bit here). As a background to how this played out locally, there's some fascinating local history written by Paul Salveson, a former professional railwayman and now visiting professor at Huddersfield Univ., on the socialist and labour movements in the Calder Valley  in the late 19th century as well as lots of railway history [http://lancashireloominary.co.uk/index.html/?fbclid=IwAR3bGRd_RxfKDQXvXUg1HRXCFif4lDpFJ1MTije9gi6qfh7CYmMLoRLz6mY ] as the nascent socialist movement was much more akin to the green and civic nationalist politics of today, with a  strong focus on localised self-improvement.

The origins of the Labour Party have more to do with non-conformist religion than with Marxism.

Not if your government is following the rest of our governments playbook.

Everything to do with it will become an "operational matter" and therefore supadupasecret.

All questions will be answered with an  "I dont comment on operational matters.".

I suppose that means at heart I'm a Whig. Which when you think about it is odd for an Australian, but totally appropriate because (pardon the pun) I'm as bald as a badger*.:jester:

*I do know the etymology of Whig, just in case someone wants to correct me.

I'm more interested in the etymology of bald as a badger

I haven't seen an actual badger  but I'm sure they must be pretty bloody hairy, given that I've got a shaving brush made out of one.

Having encountered a couple in my time, they are hairy, but maybe not after their hair has been taken to make into a shaving brush? :)

OK, so youse get a badger, pluck him, make a  brush out of his hair - probably right in front of him, then mock him for being a baldy..

Truth be told, I'm starting to  wonder if that is the kind of behaviour that those olden-day American colonial  blokes were having a bit of a  whinge about back  in Edwardians post.

In legal terms could that be a case of "badgering the witness".

Regardless of the nature of badgers in the follicle department we do have our own Hairy Nosed Wombat. Which are kind of cute.

... but not piebald. The baldness of the badger refers to the black-and-white, i.e. piebald, pattern of its coat.

Ahhhh..... so this bloke is as bald as a badger!

That sort of hairstyle always reminds me of the neer-do-wells in Catherine Cooksons "The Mallen Streak", a steamy saga concerning

Quote

a ruthless 19th century Northumberland Squire, Thomas Mallen, and the tumultuous lives of his multiple illegitimate children distinguishable by a white streak in their hair.

It always amuses me when people adopt it...

Not only are badgers hairy [and have a very nasty bite]...but a badger-hair shaving brush an be very long lasting! I've had mne nearly 40-odd years now....I also have two replacements for it...which are old enough that the packaging they came in has disintegrated  over time.

I suspect my original badger brush will outlast me by a country mile?

{No, I don't  sport a beard!]

The truth is out there - radicalised in the so-called  'bristle wars' conducted under the cover of the TB cull, an army of  fanatical jihadist badgers is now established in their stronghold in the Quantocks  from where they intend to move out to retake the south-west and destabilise the Cotswolds. Remember, you'll never win a land war in Somerset !

Badger Drones - that's the answer.

Any resemblance to radio-controlled model airplanes stuffed with homemade explosives is purely coincidental.
