Proceedings of the Castle Aching Parish Council, 1905

So, in the news we have a major international crisis on the Ukrainian border with professional Man-Baby Vladimir Putin threatening to invade a sovereign state unless Europe and NATO gives him his way. It will not, I think, lead to war, but it represents the first idiotic steps along the path to a major European conflagration by an autocratic nationalist populist.

So, obviously, that's not the top headline here in the UK because a Serbian tennis player has a visa issue in Australia.

Now I have a couple of prejudices to declare. First, to say I find tennis boring is an understatement. Given the choice between turning on the telly during Wimbledon and viewing freshly applied paint for as long as it takes to dry, paint wins out every  time, even to the extent that I'll happily find something to paint in preference to watching a second of tennis.

My second pertinent prejudice is that I think that anti-vaxxers are irresponsible, selfish morons. The more prominent and influential they are, the more grievous their dangerously perverse idiocy.

So, you can imagine how far the dial moves on my sympathy meter in the case of Novax Jokeovic and his Hotel from Hell experience. Yes, I know there is a point about the potential effect of vaccines on elite athletes, but many of us have made career and financial sacrifices and suffered loss. Sometimes we've had no choice, because the authorities have prioritised public health over private wealth, though much of the time the vast majority of us have chosen to act responsibly in the interest of public safety. So, no, Novax, your tennis career is not more important than public health. However, I may be crediting Novax and his adherents with too informed and reasoned a position, based on the brain-dead comments of his family and the Serbian premier.

Yet this story is a gift to connoisseurs of schadenfreude, because, on the other side of the conflict, one gets to enjoy the discomfort of populist politicians whose inept handling and knee-jerk reaction to the Novax scandal has now been held as procedurally unfair by the court.

Here in the UK our inept populist politicians got away with a not dissimilar incident when lots of foreign 'officials' (hangers-on} were waived through on their junket to attend some match at Wembley.  How did they get away with that? It's Football, stupid.

I find myself in agreement with most of your post but felt I'd make the above amendment.

Fascinating and disturbing; these fault lines never go away.

Still, good to see that Liz Truss is on the job, no doubt saving Britain from any Slavic cheese-based imperialism.

M's Truss is currently sharpening up her comedy act, with the intention of achieving a long held ambition of becoming top billing.

The contenders-in-waiting are busy working on their appeal to their party. That results in them doing things that are bad for the country in the short term. But I draw some comfort from the thought that any of them would be bad for their party in the longer term.

As Tennis is about the only sport that I actually enjoy watching I have a slightly different viewpoint here, but its not that different. NoVax is a conceited, self agranded prick. His tennis isn't that good to watch (actually I never watch him as I find it boring to watch!) and he thinks he's the bees knees. Frankly I hope he gets deported and is banned from Oz for life. It would be nice if we could find a way for him to be banned from the UK too. He does nothing for the sport, and I wish him a racket in the face...

But why are we even hearing about him? There's much more important things going on in the world, and he's just some tennis guy. Have we heard about the girl thats going through the same thing? No, she hasn't got the money he has, so she'll be deported and miss out on a bit of earnings...

What is more interesting is why are we still encouraging gobal sports? In this day and age this sort of travel should be stopped (and it will stop us getting thrashed while trying to win an eggcup of ash) .

Here we had blow by blow live coverage and updates of yesterdays Novac court session. I cannot think of absolutely anyone who gives a toss, tennis these days is just another reason for online betting services to cram in 5 million ads during the TV coverage in order to portray gambling as more like James Bond Casino style glamour and less Andy Capp style hopelessness.

Isn't that true of all sport nowadays?  Everyone seems to be sponsored by an on line batting company.

With, perhaps, the exception of the England cricket team, whose batting has been far from on-line.

Yet they showed promise in the practice session and have such  shapely ankles

Point of order Mr Chairman, - the worthy member from Sydney is implying that women are unable to play a decent game of cricket.

Apologies if I seemed to be casting nasturtiums, on the contrary I was admiring their field placement,  in particular having a 3rd slip who is about 3 foot 6.

A Scotsman making a pun about cricket? I am stumped!

They've sense enough to stay out of it..

Haven't been forced to play it myself since I was at school.

As far as I can remember, the matches went like this:

Only the popular boys get to bat or bowl.

The other twenty or so stand around the edges discussing more appealing subjects such as girls and motorbikes.
