Has anyone built a GW/WR goods shed in 00 that has a metal clad extension?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone.

During the 1930s- end 1940s the GWR (amongst others) put in place plans to concentrate goods parcels (sometimes called smalls) operations in area centres rather than handling them at every station.

Examples of centres I am aware of include Maidenhead, Slough and Witney.

This necessitated extending the Goods Sheds at many of these centres. The construction of these extensions was in metal clad steel frameworks and had larger road vehicle loading platforms than the traditional brick built goods sheds they were attached to. Work started in the 30s but the War got in the way, so many were not built until the late 40s.

Has anyone built one of these in 00 gauge?

If so, do you have any photos or other details of your construction methods and the completed model that you can share?

Many thanks

Paul

Hi Paul

Is this the kind of goods shed you mean?

I wonder if an extension could be put on this...

.. using the corregated iron?

Hi Keith,

Yes, Witney is one of the few such sheds that there are decent pictures of!

The Scalescenes shed and corrugated iron might be a good starting point for  such a model.

However, since I posted this thread things have changed somewhat.

At the time i was looking to model Maidenhead Goods Shed which also had such an extension but pictures of which are scarce. The dreaded virus put pay to the layout based on the relief tracks and branch at Maidenhead as the people down to build the layout were, because of their ages, worried that they could go down with the virus mid build and so only wanted to do simpler projects.

So my layout has been revamped into phase 1 (which is self contained) and based on Thame in Oxfordshire, with phase 2 to be build at a later date based on High Wycombe.

Now Thame goods shed was quite small and although High Wycombe goods shed did have an extension, there is less space for it than there was for Maidenhead shed, so I think the extension will have to go!

Thanks anyway for your interest, and if you want to see how I am getting on have a look at my layout thread "Lower Thames Yard" which sometime soon will change to "My Wycombe Railway" once construction starts, hopefully early in the new year.

Best regards

Paul
