Overscale 'HO-ish' American EMD F or E 'bulldog' cab unit?

Recommended Posts

Am wondering if any manufacturer ever made an 'HO' scaled American F or E unit that was over-scale in height and width. As in, inching up closer to 4mm scale.

I'd be thinking of something ancient & toylike, eg, Tyco, Lima or Bachmann, I imagine.

Told Fleischmann were notorious for this, but unsure they did an F or E unit.

Cheers, Ben

The triang transcontinental is obviously supposed to be an F unit but is rather approximate.

There is also a matching B unit and a double ended version, something like an Australian prototype. As can be seen from the video, the Tri-ang passenger cars are H0 scale.

All the other models are H0 AFAIK.

Fleischmann did an Alco FA that was quite close to 00. You might also want to check out the 'American oo today' page where some of these and other over scale (for HO) models have been detailed up, such as the AHM/Model Power Alco switcher.

It's not easy to find and that link might not work but if you type it into your search box thingy it will find it.

I can only find a Fleischmann FA2 and Baldwin switcher, no F unit.

The Triang 'Transcontinental' is a bit too primitive, after something kitbash-able.  If it is even there, that is.

Fred Schorr (?) did OO cast metal F3s but they've got to be  rare, unless anyone is selling moldings of them.

You did say ancient & toylike... :scratchhead: :mosking:  Tri-ang Trans-Continental would've been my suggestion too.

The underlying question has to be - why?? :dontknow:

Hi , to see if an OO scale Victorian Railways (Australian) B or S unit could be kitbashed.

well why not start with the Hornby VR S class? It is a little less crude than the triang and has the right number of wheels and is in 4mm scale.

Is there a particular reason for it to be 4mm scale? Lima did both the B & S Class loco's in HO many years ago and more recently Auscision Models have done A's & B's and Trainorama have done the S class? I some of each though I am still not convinced of the Traino S class hence I only have 1, they are a pain to re-gaueg too.

Once swapmeets start up again, I will give one of the Hornbys a closer look. But I have heard that while they are over-long for HO, they don't scale to 4mm/ft when it comes to width & height.

I like the look of 21mm gauge when I've seen layouts using it. So it's just to see whether OO  Victorian Railways is feasible.

That's a fair shout, though would it not be easier to go with HO models on EM (or ever so slightly wider!) track. This is one of my Bulldogs sat on EM gauged track, I have never got to the point of building a full layout yet!!
