This is a fun project I have been doing based on the West Midlands Railway which is what I have been working on and this was the start of something special - taking a handful of modern-day railway companies and giving them the Pre-Grouping steam era treatment.

*The Midland and Grand Central Joint Railway (based on two companies merged together) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Midland

*The Wrexham and Shropshire Railway (based on the original yet short-lived company) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrexham_%26_Shropshire

*The English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (based on the original railway company but given a steam-era treatment) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB_Cargo_UK

As well as designing locomotives and coaches, I will be working on freight rolling-stock, too. Well, that's my Pandemic Lockdown project sorted!

You fail to mention Scotrail.

In November 1871 merger talks between the Caledonian and North British boards had reached an advanced stage, even to the extent of proposing 'The United Caledonian Railway' as the name of the new company.   One clause of the agreement invited the Glasgow and South Western Railway to join the amalgamated company.  The special meeting of Caledonian shareholders agreed the proposals, with two dissenters, however the NB shareholders did not like the terms and rejected the proposal.

One of the proposals for the grouping after WW1 was to group all the Scottish companies into one.

This is all detailed in 'The Caledonian, Scotland's Imperial Railway, A History' by David Ross.

  • 1 year later...

Well, it;s time to get the ball rolling again on this series as not one but two locomotives would be on the workbench simultaneously!

My West Midlands Railway 3F 0-6-0 Saddle Tank will be made using the SECR S Class (a rebuild from one member of the SECR C Class during WW1) or the Triang Clockwork Saddle Tank from the early Triang Days. The chassis would have a modern up-to-date one from most likely the GWR 57XX Class or 8750 Class though the body would most likely be adapted to fit it on along with some modifications and not just on the outside...

Moving onto the next model, I settled on another Pre-Grouping Style company:

The Devonshire and Cornwall Railway (much like the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway as well as the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway but more of a Western Region flavour).

I shall be making a roster of locomotives soon as this is another fictional railway company in the making.
