Some work is being done on the layout for the first time in a while. Hiding the 4 track entrance from the fiddle yard had been playing on my mind and an idea I had previously discounted is now being pursued, ie a short covered fuelling area instead of the angled road bridge. I built up a couple of walls today to get a better idea, which can be seen in the photo, placed for visualising what I have in mind.

I think this will help disguise the hole in the sky much better than the bridge (once it has a roof anyway!). Locos arriving from the fiddle will still have the cabs visible, poking out of the shed.

The grey retaining walls will go, to be replaced by a slightly longer 2 storey admin building at the front, and another low relief one against the backscene, with the main shed wall backdrop slid to the right (it is loose in any case). The bufferstop and short headhunt (lower left) will also be removed to accomodate this and to allow a fuel tank to be sited.

I feel more enthused to make progress now, which can only be a good thing!

My Railroad Class 40 has also had a bit of a makeover recently for service on the layout.

Although the Fuel shed is still not completed, it has now got (most of) a roof at least!

The bridge abutment has been removed and an MMR laser cut water tower kit built to hide the entrance from the fiddle yard. The disused siding and buffer stop will be removed allowing a fuel tank to be featured instead.

Next I need to finish the shed and fill in the gap on the backscene.....

A bit more progress! The kick back siding has been shortened to curve off the front of the baseboard. A tiny loco (basically a Ruston 48DS or Wickham trolley!) will still just about fit if required. Needless to say a facia panel above the level of the track will be fitted!

A Faller fuel tank now sits in this area and has had some light weathering along with the water tower.20221101_171258.jpg.d064b9b83af7a2164dba02bd7547ef29.jpg

The fuelling shed has been painted in its base colours and awaits gutters, weathering and corrugated clear panels on the roof.

Elsewhere, having become unhappy with it (mainly because it got in the way of photography), the loading platform at the front of the layout has been removed and replaced with a roadway, which may end up with a few parked cars. I need to add about an inch of track and a bufferstop at the far end (right hand edge in photo below), before ballasting it and the altered kick back siding.

I am feeling much happier with these aspects now.

I've been having problems posting elsewhere on RMweb lately, not sure if it's my Samsung phone browser (recently updated) - as another user has said to me he has similar issues - or some issue with RMweb not liking Android phones, so this is kind of a test post; if there is a huge gap between this text and the photo I can assure you it is not of my doing!

Anyway, work is once more underway on the layout, which is due to make its exhibition debut at Rainhill show on 4th & 5th March, so photos of progress will (hopefully) appear shortly.

Otherwise I have been mainly doing more stock cut & shut projects of late.

Had a great weekend at Rainhill show and put "a few faces to names" which is always nice. All ran well apart from having to sort a Seep point motor polarity switch, my own doing as it was slightly off centre, and chose the show to reveal itself as is typical! I only managed a few photos (with apologies for the gap below due to unresolved strange posting issues).

Hi Signaller69,

Wow, what a brilliant thread. And fantastic modelling. The stabling point just captures the atmosphere and the high level carriage road as a transition into the carriage shed back scene......genius.

I can almost smell diesel exhaust and the whiff of lube oil and diesel fuel from the sodden ballast.

Very much liking the motive power variety, an interesting point in time / history with the green to blue transition together with the last hurrah of earlier classes.

I am very impressed with this, it's superb observational modelling.

Cheers

I like the higher-level stock siding which brings more 3D to the scene. Any more progress since your last post?

Hello Kevin, apologies for the delay responding, as you can probably guess by this (!) I have not added any further detailing lately due to lack of time and other commitments. Some of the inspiration came from your "70s Spotting Days" Scotland volume I should add, so thankyou for that!

Hi,

Thanks for your kind comments and apologies again for the delay in responding as I have not looked in for a while.

Yes, a fascinating period as you say, with many changes even during the short period I aim to portray (1969-74) with the class 17s and 29s being withdrawn and replaced with mainly class 24s & 25s around 1972.
