Rail-Online
Hi, Bachmann produce their 4mm cement hopper in red Tunnel livery. Can anyone tell me what period this model represents? I thought most of the cement wagons were built in BR livery so when did they start having PO liveries applied? Cheers Tony
RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted November 4, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 4, 2020 Looking at pics on Paul Bartlett's site it would be about 1977. I remember seeing them around Pitstone around that time.

Which is probably because I didn't take any between 1967 and 1977, certainly not an answer. https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brpresflotunnel Paul
Rail-Online
If they were built in 1961 was the Tunnel levery from new I wonder? Tony
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted November 6, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2020 Tunnel cement wasn't incorporated until 1975 according to this: https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/01205542 So presumably the wagons wouldn't be so liveried until after this date? Mike.
warringtonbankquay
There is a detailed article in Rail Express dated February 2010 about these wagons, including a colour photo of one of the eight Private Owner Tunnel Cement wagons. Mike. The company pre-existed that Incorporation; it was founded in 1874.
caradoc
Indeed, and in the early 1970s I had Wrenn (ex-Hornby Dublo) Presflos branded 'Tunnel Bulk Cement' ! According to Ramsay's these were produced from 1971 to 1992.
br2975
The 'Rail Express' referred to above article will tell you all you need to know - including which private owners owned which wagons, which were in addition to the BR built wagons.

As there seem to be (at least) 2 different designs of board, does the article specify any timescales? Mike.
br2975
The BR 'Presflo' wagons were built to 13 different 'lots' over a period of ten years from 1954, and by five different builders e.g. BR Shildon, Met-Camm, Central Wagon, Butterley Engineering Co and Gloucester RC&W. . Tunnel Cement (and Rugby Cement) both hired BR built wagons , many of the hired wagons carried advertising boards for those two companies. . The Tunnel Cement wagons worked from Purfleet, Tring & Penyffordd to terminals at King's Cross, Bevois Park (Southampton), Kew Bridge, Oakengates and Birmingham. . Many, if not all, the BR wagons hired to Tunnel Cement carried both their BR number, and a seperate Tunnel Cement fleet number. . In addition to the hired BR wagons, Tunnel Cement also owned eight of its' own wagons, Built by the Butterley Engineering Co in 1961 whence they were numbered 1A - 8A. . These wagons were registered by the LMR, and allocated the registration numbers 184700-184707 . With the advent of TOPS, they were allocated the numbers TC8901-TC8908. . The 8 Tunnel Cement wagons originally carried a specialist sulphate resisting product, from Aberthaw - Southampton, although in later years the flow was from Tring - Southampton. . Withdrawal appears to have been sometime after 1986. . Hope this helps ? . Brian R Edited November 10, 2020 by br2975 additional info
Rail-Online
Thanks Brian, So in summary Tunnel liveried Prestflo's existed from 1961 to 1986, some hired but eight owned. They worked mainly in the south of England and from Flintshire to a limited number of terminals . Tony
