Niu Models Kits

Rather then having a multitude of separate threads covering our conversion and detailing kits, I decided to cover development and notification of all new kits within this single thread. For the snowplough and other similar models I'll continue to cover separately.

I'll summarize our rang so far a bit later, but I'll start this thread off with our latest kit, Gresham & Craven feed water heater and Hulburd boiler cleaner for K3 No. 227, as fitted to the loco from 1935 to 1940.

It’s designed to fit onto the current Bachmann K3 model and consists of water feed unit, operating rod for the boiler cleaner and loco front steps. It is a relatively easy kit to assemble onto the model, requiring removal of part of the RH side handrail and locating holes for the operating rod.

The photos below show:-

  • No. 227 at York North Shed in 1939.
  • The Bachmann model with the kit assembled (show in grey).
  • Painted and numbered model awaiting living and weathering.

It will be available in a couple weeks Price will be £12:50, and will be available either direct from us at niumodels@gmail.com, or from our ebay shop.

Looking good. Will you be offering the correct cab for the first series of K3s (including 227)?

Hope to have that one ready soon too.

These are a few pics of the second test print of the K3 GNR cab. There's a few tweaks needed to the handrails and fit onto the footplate. I'm hoping to have this ready in a couple weeks.

Back to where we began with our first kit. ACFI Feed Water Heater as fitted to A1 'The White Knight' and A3 'Shotover' between 1928 & 1938.

Designed to fit the current Hornby loco drive range, the kit consists of ACFI Support Bracket, Zenith Separator, Boiler Feed Cleat and Smokebox Mixing Chamber, along with etched brass nameplates for either of the two locos. It does require brass or copper rod/wire of various thicknesses to complete the pipework on the model.

The photos below show:-

  • 'The White Knight' & 'Shotover' with the ACFI equipment fitted.
  • The kit of parts , including etch nameplates.
  • The parts assembled onto Hornby 'Book Law' Model.
  • Completed model of 'Shotover' after pipework has been added.

The kits are £19:50 each and available for both locos.

Not sure if this is at all the right thread but as it’s about new developments I presume I can raise it here.  Any chance of niu producing 3D plastic prints of the slightly raised bonnet sections for the Rolls-Royce engined Claytons, suitable for the Heljan 4mm Claytons model?

Cheers.

The K3 kit looks excellent, and having a photo of the real thing in York is dangerous for my modelling area, and having a K3 I picked up second hand in need of a bit of TLC, it seems like a sensible choice!

The feed set for the A1&3 also looks excellent, one day I'll have a spare racehorse to fit it to! Just out of interest, what green have you used to paint the parts in the photos? As it blends very nicely with the Hornby shade.

Cheers

The paint is Railmatch Doncaster Green. The photo is a little deceiving as its actually slightly darker then the Hornby green. Both Railmatch and Precision paints have the same issue when matching back against the RTR models.

Certainly can look into this. Would you be able to post up a few photos of the loco with the raised bonnet so I can see what's involved.

I have found with most Hornby LNER Pacifics that Precision Doncaster green is the better match, there are variations amongst the Hornby versions. Railmatch version is a good colour for the Bachmann A2  and V2 versions.

This my "The White Knight " in Precision Doncaster Green. The add on kit is very good, but be warned it is fragile , a lot of wire bending is needed !!.

Not sure if I can without breaking copyright but I might be able to post some links to photos or sites.

Yep, that’s it.

There are a couple of specialist  books on the Claytons which probably will have suitable drawings in them.

I think Judith Edge kits supply/used to supply etched parts for these?  Not specifically listed on their website but mentioned as an option for their kit for a Clayton.  https://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/catalogue/judithedge.html

Maybe it was something just available at exhibitions?

There is a thread for them on here, if it is of interest and you were perhaps not aware of that option.

Thanks, yes, but they are flat brass which needs shaping, attaching and filling which may be the most basic of modelling but my old eyesight isn’t very good and getting progressively worse, hence the suggestion for pre-shaped plastic versions.

Age gets us all.

No problem, thought it worthwhile mentioning, just in case you were not aware of them!

A very popular kit is the J36 tender cab for the Hornby mode.

Introduced in 1888 by the North British Railway Company the J36 saw sterling service throughout their lives with the LNER and BR. They were often used for snow-plough duty clearing heavy snow falls. For these and other duties in exposed areas, a number of the class were also fitted with tender cabs to provide some protection to the crew from the weather. Many of these cabs remained in place throughout their operational lives until being withdrawn from service.

Out kit consists of Tender Cab and Rear Tender Steps.

The photos below show the kit fitted to the Hornby model which has be No. 176 and carried the unofficial name 'French' in honour of the service the loco provided in France during the First World War.

  • 2 weeks later...

Second item is a K5 conversation kit for the BachmannK3 model.

In  early 1945 Thompson selected K3 No. 206 to be converted from 3 cylinders to 2 cylinders as part of his programme to reduce maintenance cost and increase standardisation across the LNER fleet.

206, later BR 61863, returned to service in mid ‘45 where it mainly worked out of Stratford before being withdrawn in 1960.

The kit will consist of new footplate, cylinder block and brass sprung buffers.

We expect to have it ready for sale in the new year.

I like the look of this, what is the price likely to be, and what is involved with dissembling the K3?

Cheers from Oz,

Peter C.
