Availabity of 4mm kits for various SR EMUs and BR DMUs

Recommended Posts

Apologies for wide scope of this post, but I am hoping to find the answers to some questions regarding 4mm Kits for SR EMU's and BR DMU's

      Breaking it down   ......

      *       Are there any Kit Manufacturers who produce kits for SR EMU's of the 1950's an 1960's   ??

      *      I believe 'Phoenix kits' used to produce quite a range,  are these still available, if yes, details appreciated.

     *       Are there any kits available for the BR  DMU Class 123 or 124  ?

Many thanks,  Ian

Excuse my ignorance, how do I download a 'phoenix' catalogue ??

Bit of mix up here. Two different groups/societies.

The Phoenix stuff is available from the Southern Railways Group. Link to catalogue on this page.

The Southern Railway E Mail Group is different. Very useful website.

Has a good list of what kits have been available though. Worth noting many are no longer made but are quite easily found on the second hand market. Usually for a good price as many people want RTR instead.

Also worth a mention are DC kits. Many also out of stock, but do come up on eBay and other places for a reasonable price.

Worsley Works do a good range of etched sides etc. for Southern electric and diesel electric stock. You will need to source the rest of the parts, perhaps using suitable Bachmann and Hornby items, or parts from the MJT/Dart or Replica ranges

This year I have obtained a couple of Phoenix SR coach kits, some months ago I contacted the mail order dept as I needed a couple of guards duckets (the sides have cut outs), these were duly supplied, I don't think there are many sides left but the castings are very useful

As it happens in an eBay lot I won last week there were most of the parts for a MJT 2 car EPB (sides, ends, chassis, 1 roof and some bogie parts) and a nearly complete set of etchings for an EMU Models 2 NOL driving trailer car, its missing the castings and both ends, but as it happens Dave Ellis at Roxey mouldings took over this kit and the driver ends are a spare which Dave sells and I guess if I speak with him nicely he would have a look round for some castings and instructions.

As you say the MJT are not kits but a set of parts to form a kit

Back in the mists of time I produced a 2Bil kit. This went to Colin Ashby but fortunately did not go on to the dreaded non producing them firm in Somerset like my LNER coach range. I believe that the moulds went to Phoenix so it is probably still available but for most people replaced by a RTR set from Hornby. There was a thread on here about building /detailing a kit a few years ago.

best wishes,

Ian

Your 2BIL kit is listed on the "exKirk" list at Phoenix paints:

Ah! those 2BIL kits, they got me into 3rd rail EMUs. I picked up two at a very good price quite some years back. They went together well and ran (with Tenshodo power) on my first EMU layout for quite a few shows. I still have them stored away. I then got another along with the conversion kit to make it into a 2HAL, but then Mr Hornby brought out their 2HAL! So it got stored unmade.

Oh well, then the same thing happened with Charlie's EMU and DEMU kits. So all in all quite  few languishing projects!!!

Yes. I've bought some of the coach kits recently. Still good quality. They also sell parts from the kits separately which can be useful.

That's the other Phoenix which is the paint maker which can be a bit confusing in that both of them supply coach kits and parts.

Useful page about the Kirk Southern kits here.
