Cement train derailment in Sheffield

Recommended Posts

More photos in this report, including one which shows how much of the station throat has been affected by this derailment. Mostly V tanks - some probably 40 and more years old.  https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/all-lines-through-sheffield-blocked-as-freight-train-derails/ar-BB1aUexl?ocid=msedgntp

Just add water for paved track ! Good in that the derailement was enough to quickly part brake pipe and stop train. Makes making good much easier but still not much fun. No doubt the RAIB can make a good 50 pages of reading later ... Hopefully recovery will be quicker, shame no Tinsley crane to hand !

I’m guessing the wagon thats flipped, is the culprit looking at the angle of its axle. looks like a fairly low speed event.

Didnt even think these wagons were still going.

Interesting thing is that the third wagon behind the toppled one looks to be on the tracks up to the little used head shunt, not the northbound track like the ones in front of the toppled one.

Not sure that the reporter covering this on the Nottingham Post website is too familiar with the railways, given the caption.

Given we have these in Yorkshire I assume the reporter has used one and thought that they had similar level comfort as a wagon.

its likely that the point (under the left hand wagon) is the culprit and it split the train

The reports say Cross Country not using the "Old Road" via Barrow Hill and Eckington. Is this because of lack of route knowledge or train paths?

Sorry I typed the above based on the original post on the BBC news site which said Cross Country were terminating at Derby and Leeds or York. Other operators were bussing people from Chesterfield to Sheffield.

66603 was the train loco, according to Railrecord.

Direction of travel is left to right as per most of the photos. So the next S&C unit are facing switches in D.O.T., located just about where that wagon looks to have hit the brick work. The right hand turn out leads from the platform loop to the main line and the left hand straight route leads to a siding road, which doesn’t look to be heavily used. All this means that following the 053 Facing Switch Inspection derailment hazards ,this is a classic derailment location, given the disproportionately used routes.. Heavily used / worn LH stock fronts and LH switch rail, in the facing direction. Flange climb possible...

Add to this mix the PCA cement tank wagon, which on occasion is about as stable as a pig on stilts, and it has potential......

But who knows....at least no one injured or killed.

Who said the brake pipe parted?  Even the wagon on it's side is still coupled to the adjacent ones with brake pipes connected:

10807 visible in the pic above is from a batch built 1979-1981. I don't know if I've noticed any 4-digit ones on the Hope runs recently, which were 1973-4 - have they all gone? (Dates from the lists at LTSV)

I have noticed no. 11111 though!
