In the beginning, HST sets were regarded as fixed formation units, comprising two power cars and (on ECML) eight trailer cars. 254016 was one of the small number allocated to the Scottish Region and as such, all vehicles bore SC prefixes to the vehicle numbers.

As an aside, my first ever ride on an HST was from KX to Edinburgh in Summer 1978, and the set was 254016! Upon arrival at Edinburgh, I was able to blag a look around the engine bay and cab of the rear power car, 43087.

So just to confirm, even the coaches had SC prefixes?
