Thanks - here's a picture of the boards in their home.

and under construction....although it was a "quick build" I felt it needed  a water feature...so I made some modifications during board construction. This changed as the project progressed but the canal stayed in situ.

Yes - the SMS boards are designed for the box - as endorsed by "our" very own Phil Parker in BRM....

Bridges over the canal. The single "between the rails" Kadee uncoupling magnet will form part of the bridge.

and the second attempt at a planked crossing in the yard. #1 was too high.

Wow! Spend the weekend away from RMWeb and a whole new thread appears!

Fantastic layout Gilbert, very very inspiring, I'll look forward to seeing more.

One question, the track work looks superb, what did you use for the ballast?

Its a mixture of Woodland scenics buff and light gray plus some Green Scenes grey. IIRC the whole thing was very lightly airbrushed with Precision weathered sleepers - a very light brownish grey

I did say earlier I'd taken the opportunity to detour to some kit building...

Nice model, I have always had a soft spot for the J70. Don't worry about the Tri-ang style couplings, they come right off. At least it doesn't have a face on it! ;)

I really like the 1950s style road direction sign. That is something that I haven't seen modelled before. There's still quite a few left around here.

Since the foto they have had sound fitted as well as Kadees which I know don't suit everyone but allow for a bit of delayed action shunting fun.....just need to fire up the airbrush for a  bit of weathering....

I'm quite impressed by the way digital sound has been properly tailored to suit different locos as well as the speed etc. When it first appeared it was a bit of a trainset gimmick, but having seen up to the minute versions at exhibitions (remember those??) I have had a change of opinion. It's not something that I can use as a lot of my engines are ancient.

I wouldn't worry about the type of coupling you choose, so long as it suits your purposes. There are some and we have all met them, who can drone on for hours about how you have chosen the wrong coupling.....

They really need to get out more. Until such time as we have tiny robot railwaymen to do the work, it will always be a compromise. Of course, that would also mean we had Terminators, so we're screwed anyway.

If you don’t mind me asking, what did you use for ballast on this layout and is there a build thread for it?

I'm adding to this thread as I go.

Ballast is Woodland scenics buff and light gray plus Green scenes grey. Over spray of Precision weathered sleepers and rails picked out with rust.
