Aston On Clun. A forgotten Great Western outpost.

I've been busy with the thrilling task of filing the square pegs on the bottom of the cattle dock fence posts into round ones.

 

But that's not a very interesting picture. 

 

The 8 ton van is coming together okay though.

I have been tinkering with the grass in the sheep field. A tiny bit of Woodland Scenics blended turf and odd blobs of PVA , covered in 1mm spring fibres and 4mm meadow fibres. I hope it shows up in the photos.

Probably not useful information as an addition to the detail of your sheep field, but Aston on Clun is the only place where I have seen an Adder .... scared me somewhat as it slithered under a field gate just as I was about to open it.

Please check that the bottom of the headstocks are aligned with the bottom of the solebars.

No, it's about 15 thou out. It's fitted flush with the floor, so that's clearly a design fault with the kit itself. Might have known it, it all went together neatly. 

There's no simple way to thin the solebars accurately before assembly, unless you know of one?

Oddly enough, I've only ever seen one Adder, it was a disappointing 12-18 inches long for a potentially deadly snake, but it was still a bit closer than I would have liked. I had stopped my bike near the former LNWR halt at Grace Dieu Priory in Leicestershire and sat down against a drystone wall. The little bu66er came out of the wall, looked up at me and disappeared into the bracken.

I decided to finish my cigarette break sitting on the bike instead.

It is indeed a design fault. My solution here (a coke wagon but the problem and solution are the same):

Thanks for that, I'll modify the ten tonner by raising the floor locating groove in the van ends with a razor saw. On this one I can fake it by trimming the ends of the solebars. No option really!

 

The ten tonner also has no reference to in the instructions that came with it, so I have no idea on running numbers. 

Both kits come with methfix transfers, having read the instructions, would seem to be more trouble than they're worth. Locating them accurately on the model seems a bit hit and miss too.

The 10 ton van is longer - 16'6" - and so has different mouldings and does not have this problem. Actually that kit can represent either diagram D362, 8 tons, or D363, 10 tons - visually identical. There are some numbers in Essery, Midland Wagons

D362: 4197, 57471, 8780, 8940, 7325, 90437, 90766

D363: 31319, 32504, 47961

Either: 3906, 22700, 23318, 68283, 4166, 92587.

 

They must be pretty ancient kits to have Methfix transfers. The first ones I built, in the 1980s, had Pressfix. Since being reintroduced a couple of years ago, they have waterslide.

Persevere. Methfix transfers are, IMHO, the best. Make sure you dilute the meths as per the instructions before you use it.

Thanks, that's very helpful. The kits are old, one box has a price tag of £1.50, over the top of another. They were a pre covid eBay buy. 

Lately I only buy obsolete kits secondhand. If you buy for instance, a yellow box or earlier Ratio kit used, you might be saving £2, (And I've even seen bidding surpass new price!) but the  plastic may have gone like glass, the transfers will be about kn@ckered and it will have the old wheels on a sprue, which were never much good. You're better off buying a current offering I find.

I met my first wild adder in June this year:
