MrWolf
Quite a bit of fiddly ballasting around the point rodding. The glue has a bluish tint until dry. The ballast nearest is as laid with no glue. Edited August 24, 2022 by MrWolf Replaced picture

KNP
What is the going rate at the moment for ballasting. 1m of ballasting = 1 meal? If that is so then there might be a que forming at the front door as some of your avid followers might join in.
RMweb Gold Regularity Posted November 26, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2021 Will you be adding a top layer of fine material to represent the smaller stuff (ash, etc) often used in goods yards? 1

Soup kitchen for homeless railway modellers? Given where I'm taking the memsahib this evening, I've worked out that the ballasting costs about £40 per hour.... 1 4

Definitely, but filling most of the way between the sleepers with ballast seemed quicker and less messy than trying to use fillers or clay. 59 minutes ago, Schooner said: ...and if so, what do you plan to use? MrWolf
They also do a Siding Ash, so I'll be testing that out shortly. 1

MrWolf
I'll be getting into that as soon as possible once the basic ballasting is completed. I've also got the road and the level crossing to sort out!
Popular Post MrWolf
Something else that stands in the way of ballasting is the concrete apron for the cattle dock. Whilst the human tamper was busy with ballast last night, I painted the apron provided with the Ratio cattle dock. I used humbrol satin 133 as a basis for the salt glazed drainage trough, The concrete area I suspect would be well worn so I painted it with varying mixes of 110 natural wood and 01 grey primer before stippling in a quantity of talcum powder. Now that mess has set, I can weather the drain and paint the stone edging blocks to match the dock itself. RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted November 26, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2021 Nice work Rob, love the terracotta look to the drain. Don't forget some blobs of brown for the... umm... deposits... Al. 1
David C
Not sure about brown blobs. One of the perks of working on the railways, at least, in the country, was a ready supply of fertilizer for gardens, allotments etc. All the brown blobs would be quickly shovelled up and disposed of, or so I have read in histories of assorted branchlines. Indeed, on at least one occasion on (I think) the Kingsbridge branch, a fight broke out over "ownership" of certain brown blobs. David C 3
MrWolf
There will be a manure bin around the back of the cattle dock and probably quite a crop of spuds... 1

Mike 84C
Your ballasting gang is highly skilled but where is the little ash path that usually ran each side of the ballast for our friendly local lengths man to walk along ? This layout is coming to fruition and 111 pages! brilliant.
MrWolf
The cinder path and general muck is literally in the post! The goods yard surfaces will be installed at the same time. Not a lot done since yesterday, the ballaster / tamper has only just got up. Last night turned into this morning, so I call it a result. I have managed to finish painting the cattle dock drain, so ballasting can be completed in the goods yard in readiness for burying half of it in ash. MrWolf
I've run out of excuses for not fitting the railings to the cattle dock. Extra holes have to be drilled where railings meet at ninety degrees. Still, I've modified so much of it now, it doesn't matter. Ratio don't actually make the dock in brick for starters! That for all of you non engineers in the audience is a 2" square. Used to check that items are at 90 degrees to one another. Occasionally it is also useful as a paperweight and for smashing bugs flat. Welders please take note: It is NOT a slag chipping hammer.... 1 1
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted November 27, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2021 And not an item used in the construction of my cattle dock, even though I have one. Which is sadly evident if you look at my fence posts! 2
