Could I have your permission to use that as an extra excuse to add to my list? I think that I’ve worn out the “can’t be bothered to do anything” excuse I suppose I should post something on Warren just in case anyone following the thread thinks I’ve either given up or worse 2 1
MrWolf
Certainly you can. I'll have to think up some more reasons to be unproductive. The dog ate my homework doesn't count!

I need a very large one of the same design for a GWR goods yard crane. I don’t fancy fabricating one! RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted June 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2021 I'm contemplating using some of the smaller ones (perhaps a different fret) as replacement steering wheels on tweaked Oxford vehicles. 1

I am after about 20mm diam. They don’t seem to do a fret for 7mm/ ft.
MrWolf
I just had a look at the Ratio 543 Hoist kit with the idea of liberating the mechanical parts from it, but that has straight spokes.

RMweb Gold Limpley Stoker Posted June 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2021 I started with the Ratio kit but have discarded most parts as they are not delicate enough for the small crane I’m trying to replicate. Good wheeze about heating and rotating the plastic wheel rim.
MrWolf
Ancorton do this one, not sure what the wheel is made of though. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133635589343
RMweb Gold Limpley Stoker Posted June 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2021 Ancorton kits are mainly laser cut mdf. I came across this website advertising O gauge brass wheels so I am tempted to try them but need to see the dimensions first. If ok I will have some spare ! MrWolf
If that is the case you won't really get any relief details. I'm not a fan of MDF to be honest, I usually refer to it as Medium Density Firewood, although it's actually rubbish firewood. I was looking for a 7mm version on the Wizard Models website. I've had some really good stuff from them. I am thinking that you need something 12-20mm in diameter, to represent 3'-5' feet. This crane was originally inside the goods shed at Lancaster Green Aire (Midland Railway) the pulley is about 4'-0" diameter. RMweb Gold Limpley Stoker Posted June 24, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2021 (edited) As it’s all quiet at Wolf Hall I thought I might provoke things by showing further Ratio kitbutchery to replicate the lightweight goods crane at Limpley Stoke. As you can see I’m still waiting for the large brass wheel, but after the mandatory painting + weathering it might prove acceptable ! RMweb Gold Limpley Stoker Posted June 24, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2021 So I guess the motorised points haven't been a great success. I watch Tractor Ted or Even Tractor Clarkson for amusement, giving the smoke a swerve though.
MrWolf
It's a song line, you might recognise it from Pulp Fiction or several other Bruce Willis films. It means that I've been having a bout of the doom is all. I quit smoking ages ago. PS The points work perfectly! Popular Post MrWolf
It's actually very cleverly written. I wasn't even born when it was released, but the way we often cynically pretend that all's well with ourselves is as relevant now as it was then. If someone asks if you're doing okay, they don't actually want to know if you're not. My inner cynic says they ask after you, just in case you walk under a train they can say "He /she was fine when I asked him the day before." It's been a funny couple of weeks, the memsahib hasn't been well (not covid!) but has had to keep slogging through her post-grad and I have been doing my bit to keep her bolstered and cheerful. Another close friend who was only in his fifties died last week. To add insult his estranged wife has appeared from under her bridge shouting that his entire estate is hers now. Luckily that includes the debts and failing business that she left him with. Good luck with that! So model railway projects have taken a bit of a back seat. There is a plan to get busy with landscape and ballasting this weekend and turn our phones off!

RMweb Gold Limpley Stoker Posted June 25, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2021 I chose to model Limpley Stoke, ( three miles from where I live) in a large shed starting about 15 yrs ago, (despite opposition from domestic management who continues to find me more important things to do, hence the slow evolution). The area is well documented with lots of photographic evidence so having laid down the track some 10 yrs ago I get most enjoyment from making the buildings as accurate as possible from card and scalescenes textures —then fighting the woodlice who try to eat them! I’m still looking for a varnish that deters them. 9 3
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted June 25, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2021 Noted the strategically placed "Painting and Decorating" book. One of the important tasks set by the management, no doubt? 1
