Peter Kazmierczak
During the 1970s and 80s, David & Charles published a series of books, region by region, on the Forgotten Railways of Britain. I know that eleven volumes were published, together with a larger-format introductory tome. However I'm wondering if there was a Vol 12 on South-West England? It's mentioned, in one of the other volumes, as being "in preparation", with the author being David St John Thomas (the "David" of D&C). Was it ever published? I can't find any trace that it was, though some claim to have a copy. I'm wondering if they're getting confused between this series and the Regional History series, also published by D&C. Any ideas? 47401
Hi Peter, I remember seeing on here a thread about the Regional History series which listed all the titles; I think the Forgotten Railways series also got covered which might help your search. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 20, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 20, 2020 If one were to look down the 'Books' section of the forum one would find this - which might help? - https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/158692-david-charles-regional-history-of-the-railways-of-britain-are-they-any-good/
Peter Kazmierczak
Thanks Mike. At the front of the volume on the Chilterns and Cotswolds (2nd Ed, 1984) in the Forgotten Railways series, it states: In preparation - South-West England by David St John Thomas West Midlands by Rex Christiansen The latter was certainly published, but the former ??? I've searched on www.bookfinder.com but there's no mention of it. As David St T was one of the founders of D&C, maybe he had more latitude as to if (or when) his work would be published.
