A new series starts this coming Friday (27/11) on Channel 5 at 8PM

 

First programme  cover North Devon (Barnstaple & Ilfracombe and Lynton & Barnstaple)

I, (along with many others I recall), had reservations about his first series. But I have to say that I found series 2 to be much better, and have also enjoyed the episodes of the current series so far. I do like a bit of social history, and not just railway coverage, so I think the balance is quite good. Mrs Rivercider is also finding the series interesting.

I watched the second episode and found pleasant watching, although I craved to know a bit more. Good light entertainment but thinly spread. It must be tricky to do a programme that will hold enough appeal for rail enthusiast and casual watcher alike though.

I was only aware of this because of Digiguide, but it seems that season 4 is starting tonight.

Last episode was in Cornwall walking the old mineral tramways and railways from coast to coast.  Quite entertaining - but (!) -  very sorry to see and hear that, during a section dealing with Trevithick, Tim perpetuated the old myth that 'Rocket' was the first * steam railway locomotive!  I often wonder if the researchers for these programmes actually do any proper research or do they just listen to what other ill-informed people have said previously and just copy it.

 

* - first 'modern' multi-tube boiler loco maybe but definitekly not 'the first'.

You're not the first person to confuse Rob Bell with Tim Dunn, as Tim recounted in Steam Railway magazine.

It did seem a real shame that Rob (not Tim!) was talking about Trevithick but jumped from Cornish boilers to Rocket with no mention of the Trevithick road vehicles or locomotives - especially as he was fairly close to Camborne.

I know!!  I just realised while I was having my Corn Flakes that I might have made a mistake - and I had.

 

 

It was latish when I did it - and after a very confusing and frustrating day.

Noticeable that they altered the order as last weeks Yorkshire one was featured as being next week's at the end, TV guide says it's Kent which IIRC was featured at the end of the Yorkshire one . Does not seem to be on next week.

With the Cornwall one I got a sense of deja vu. I then realised that Julia Bradbury did exactly the same walk, in the same direction, as this one - I hope she is getting better. I doubt you would mistake Rob with Julia though!

The latest show on the Kentish branch line was interesting, but did it need a trigger warning "shows historic footage of war". Hardly footage of the Holocaust or dead bodies.

Maybe they thought viewers would be expecting something more peaceable?  I don't remember a trigger warning for Rob Bell's series about coastal defences.

An interesting episode, but was I alone in being a bit miffed near the beginning when he was stood in a field and asked us to listen (I think the point he was trying to make was that you could hear were birds), and having the background muzak still running, thus making it difficult to hear what he was talking about.  I appreciate that the Ch5 programmes are a bit of a low budget thing, but that was an easy error to avoid.
