I wish I was just 3 years older and started say in 1977.

I did start in summer 1977, and so missed the Westerns by just a few months!!  :banghead:

I wished then that I was a few years older, to be the same age as my mate, who did see them. Funny thing is, he in turn wished he was older as well, so he'd have better memories of Steam!! No pleasing us 'spotters ;)

You go all the way from Kent to Bristol to photograph 33s!

If you lived in the south-east at around that time you had to put in a fair bit of effort to get somewhere where 33s didn’t turn up, given that they could be seen as far afield as Plymouth, Fishguard Harbour, Holyhead and Manchester.

Not a bad haul though - at least four 33s on Bath Road, which is more than I'd see sometimes on HG.

I think in the early 1980s on a weekday there would be stock at Malago Vale for one Cardiff service, one Weymouth service, and one Southampton service, possibly also a set on the Bristol - Taunton route.. Then another 33 would be required  to re-engine the first Cardiff -Pompey service. So probably at least four 33s diagrammed to stay overnight at Bath Road.

cheers

Near Miss.

These are a few I took in the Willesden area. Although I am not sure of the actual specific locations. probably 1982.

What was interesting or a bit full on was. I remember seeing a 37 pass light engine fairly slowly and stop at a red down the line. And then not long after a 47 appeared with the Steel wagons sees the 37 and rams on brakes, I remember the noise was full on as he brought the train to a halt just behind the 37. I was half expecting an impact.

The first one is looking at Old Oak Sidings and the NLL from Old Oak Common Lane, Willesden Junction High Level in the distance.

The second is Willesden Freightliner terminal and power station from Old Oak Lane bridge opposite the entrance to Willesden Junction station. The 81 is on the WCML up slow.

The other two are looking slightly more northerly from the same place, with the DC lines and the 47 coming off the NLL link and heading towards Wembley.

Withdrawn 46s

I saw a few of these round the back end of Stratford, I assume for component removal.

Does anyone  how the damage came to be on 46021, which I assume was the reason for its withdrawal.

If memory serves me right, the last 46 I saw was 46011 at Margam about a week before the final members were withdrawn.

That's part of the London International Freight Depot (LIFT) which opened, I think, around 1968. Not really concerned with the London Docks traffic though as they were already on their last legs. Mainly frequented by Ferry wagons which more likely came via Harwich.
