Not model railways but years ago was involved in an aircraft modelling contest that was just an aside to a seminar, we did a vote by Seminar attendees and that created some almost toys out of pram also, I suspect with some it doesn't matter what the public want to see which is a shame as that is what will encourage them in the hobby.

To get away from any accusation of bias, our 'Best Layout' competition was judged by the Ladies who ran the Tea Rooms at the Community Centre and had never been to an exhibition before. They found it hard to agree as they all looked at different aspects of modelling such as scenery, colours, movement etc but the one thing they didn't know anything about was model railways !!
