Signal Box Photos

Recommended Posts

A bit of a long shot, but does anyone have photos, or knows where there might be photos, of the box at Newton-le-Willows on the L&MR? I mean the BR box sited a bit further east of the original LNWR box, which just off the end of the Down platform.

One of the signal boxes on that line and I think it is the Great Missenden one shown is now at the Mid Hants Railway. Needs a lot of work but planned to be used for demonstration purposes.

Scene from afar (those with local knowledge might get the pun)

1726382659_WestburyPanel155xxx.jpg.0989803a25b543ac707715dfbd7a6b14.jpg

An unidentified class 155 set passes the Westbury Panel Signal Box on a service towards Bristol. 3/7/91.

(the photo was taken from the Farr building - formerly occupied by A E Farr - BR temporarily used some of the building for office accommodation at the advent of Trainload Freight.)

cheers

Brigg with passing coal trains (don't know why I didn't get a closer shot):

With KJ 63 in the foreground

A nice easy pull that one

A move through the crossover  in the foreground from the down to the up (towards the box)  this signal applied  even though it didn't look like it should.

A friend of mine worked that box until  Marylebone took over also worked Aylesbury which was quite a large box.

A few more now extinct boxes.

First up for lmsforever

Aylesbury   c 1988. It was as close as I could get

Northampton Bridge St c 2000, looking a bit scorched

Hartlebury Station Box c 1996 before the nameplate was stolen over the Christmas holiday

178197950_Hartlebury1996.jpg.2b1cdf2c16ad81ab2b974d1f2ad54b6d.jpg

and finally Blakedown c 1995

Blakedown is still with us though. If you took this picture today, you would still see the box in it, but it would be behind the timeatble boards in the background in its new role as a community meeting / exhibition etc space

Cracking shot of Aylesbury - SM32, and looks like a WR namer 47 - Great Western -? Actually I reckon its 47484, IKB itself.  Preferred her as D1662, but I saw that loco all over the place over many years.

Looks like it's on the up road.  Can see the old DMU stabling by the gyratory and over bridge to Stoke Mandeville and Southcourt in the distance.  Also, the line to Princes Risborough and the GWR/GCR cut off from Aynho/Ashendon junction respectively to London, curving away behind the box.

Great stuff.  I took a load of photos of the box and semaphore just before the total route modernisation under NSE.  Must try to find them.

Best regards

Interesting shot of Brigg.  Two stationary trains waiting with the gates across the line.  The bobby obviously has to hold the train in the foreground, but why on earth hasn't he opened the gates for the other train to clear the section?

Sorry, I don’t remember the sequence of events, other than it was during the Hatfield colliery landslip line closure and resulting diversions. Don’t think it was stopped for very long.

Perhaps there is a train standing behind the camera, and until that has gone he can't clear the signal to proceed over the crossing? No point in delaying motorists if the trains can't move.

Like is not good enough for those pictures Wickham Green - love them - thanks for posting.

In the Aylesbury shot you can see loads of Dutch liveried departmental in the nest of sidings by the Gyratory/Equitable life building.

P Risborough box was (is), a beautiful, controlling not just the ex GCR/GWR cut off, but also the branch to Watlington, Thame/Oxford - did it also control the connection to and Princes Risborough bay to Aylesbury ?  Must have been a very busy box back in the day.

A locally (to Aylesbury) published book from the 1990s, called "Watching the trains at Brill" has King hauled down expresses passing through Haddenham timed at 92-95mph.  Would love to have seen them hammering past on the through roads at Risborough.

Best regards

A couple of closer shots of Aylesbury South ( 14/3/90 ) ..... and I don't think Princes Ris. has appeared on this thread yet ........

The top half of Aylesbury South survives at Swithland Sidings on the GCR.

The surviving Princes Risborough 'Box was the North Box and did indeed control all the four routes radiating from the north end of the station. It also assumed control of the London end following the closure of the South Box after the demise of the goods yard.

Possibly that sort of congestion - it's double track for about 6 miles (possibly only one section?) between Brigg and Kirton in that direction, then single further.
