Scene from afar (those with local knowledge might get the pun)

An unidentified class 155 set passes the Westbury Panel Signal Box on a service towards Bristol. 3/7/91.

(the photo was taken from the Farr building - formerly occupied by A E Farr - BR temporarily used some of the building for office accommodation at the advent of Trainload Freight.)

cheers

There's a modern Doctor's surgery in Rugby which looks very similar in style to Westbury power box and not far away is a block of apartments which is a dead ringer for the main station building at Newton Abbot!

....... and the gullible owners thought the zillions of quid they'd paid the architect was for something new and original.

The building behind the 47 is called the blue leany in the town  like the photos of the town box .

I have just spent a happy hour, having discovered this thread. Very many thanks to all the contributors.

A tall order but does anyone have a publishable quality colour photo of Bangor-on-Dee, Overton -on-Dee or Newbridge box - all ex Cambrian Dutton designs? The WRRC is looking for a suitable photo for the front cover of a small drawings book which includes these boxes.

BTW I know that the first two boxes had no hyphens on the nameboards, but the railway companies seem to have included them more often than not on tickets and in timetables as did OS maps.

OT, but the blue leany (Equitable Life) is further to the left out of shot. That is Lloyd's as it's side are vertical...

Equally OT...

The Blue Leanie was by the Brookside Clinic, where the youff of Aylesbury had "its boiler tubes swept and fire box de clinkered" after "shunting incidents with condemned stock"....it was also where "water treatment pills" and other essential items made by the London Rubber Co were distributed.

Where's a winking emoji eh ?

Best regards

I stand corrected it is indeed the Lloyds building also if anybody wants to see inside a large signal box go on the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Rly website and check when the box at Risboro is open .The box is being restored and is well worth a visit and the volunteres will show how it all works.

In later years the signal box at Dawlish was only open on summer Saturdays, or when there was emergency working.

Dawlish signal box 19/7/80.

The box survived for many years after closure, but being very exposed to the elements took its toll.

Here the box is shrink wrapped.  8/6/2013

Sadly it no longer survives

cheers

Isn't there some connection between Newbridge and Erwood box?

Kevin,

Cracking photo of Dawlish.

We used to stay in the Beach Hotel.  You could sit in the bay window look through a pair of binoculars at the station and watch as the signalman pulled the  home signal outside Kennaway tunnel on or off.

I was alway fascinated by the sound of the signal wires and pulleys subtly trembling and what almost looked like a rippling motion from the station signal box to the signal, followed by that lovely diminishing sound as the signal arm bounced to off...

Summer Saturdays in the early to mid 70s trains could still be seen block to block.

Very happy memories indeed.

Cracking picture the first one, second is a bit sad.  Absence of freight, and the infrequency, and lack of 'presence' of trains means Dawlish doesnt have the magic it once had.

Happy New Year Kevin (and fellow RMwebbers)  and keep your photos - and memories coming.  Much appreciated and much enjoyed by myself and others - a bit like Dave F of this Parish's everlasting photo stream !

Happy New Year

We moved to Aberdeen from London for a couple of years and I made a point of photographing as many of the local boxes as possible. The signalman at Newtonhill put me on to this one at Pitcaple to the north of Aberdeen. It had been closed for years but survived in the undergrowth. You would not find it by chance.

Indeed. From the Erwood website:

"The Newbridge on Wye Station signal box was found on a farm being used as a chicken shed by John Wake, was restored on 2004 and has been reconstructed and sits on the exact site, and size, of the Erwood box. It is owned by John Wake but on permanent loan. It was rebuilt with help from the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust as a bat and bird observatory. "

Unfortunately for our purposes though it looks very nice it has been altered too much to be used in the book alongside Mike Lloyd's drawing of the box. Among other things, it has been re-assembled "left handed"  and reduced in length.

A couple today where trains have got in the way:

Christ's Hospital 12 June 1965 with 41287 on the 15:09 Horsham to Guildford train, this was then last day of services on that route.

Ventnor, 6 June 1965. A blow-up of a shot off the end of the platform as No. 20  was running round. Note the three-way point on the running line.

An anonymous little 'box which I think is somewhere on the South Eastern in the 1980s looking almost as if it could have just been built. Any offers on ID please?

Edit: Oldudders and others suggest it is Rye. Thanks folks.

No idea on the ID of the last 'box, but an interesting little "shelter" off to the left. Perhaps there used to be a set of points to a loop or siding(s) that required points heating, and this is where the gas bottles were? Pure guess work on my part - and probably, as usual with my guesses, no where near being right!
