It looks like it has polystyrene blocks stuck on the side. It is indeed a structure gauging train. It was in the late 1980s when the fancy 'sheet of light' SGT thingy was still under development. Some bright spark had the idea of building some new trains for the Southern without thinking whether they would fit the infrastructure or not! One of the BR Research Lab coaches was fitted with blocks of polystyrene out to the kinematic envelope of the new stuff and run round until it hit something and the blocks got damaged. Then it was a case of stopping somewhere safe, replacing the blocks (held on with double-sided carpet tape) and carry on. All good fun and a chance to get plenty of SB piccys as the passage through the stations was at reduced speed 'just in case'. 7

Look like Midland wooden posts with replacement upper-quadrant arms. The gantry in the background could be interesting as well.
50A55B
Between Christmas and New Year 1986-7 I managed to escape for a few hours and photograph around York, knowing that change was coming with ECML electrification. Unfortunately it was a filthy day and unbeknown to me my camera was playing up, so the results left a lot to be desired. Here is one result, York Yard South, being passed by a southbound class 56 hauled MGR. Also lurking in the gloom is a new class 150/2 on the BREL York test facility, amongst trade for the wagon repair shops.

They have done a nice job though. Here is a 'before' picture of Swanage in 1985. 4

RMweb Gold Not Jeremy Posted January 20, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2021 A great thread which I am much enjoying. A couple of small follow on pictures from me, first the demolition of Stratford on Avon Evesham Road crossing, snapped while hitch hiking from Coventry to Bath in 1981 or 1982. Secondly a slightly dark and distant snap of Aviemore in 1974, those locos were really going for it!

RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted January 21, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 21, 2021 I had to look up Blotoft. Google produced just three references, two of them to the railway. On the GN/GE Joint Lone and apparently now clad with UPVc rather than timber (it may be in the photo above). Thanks to all for the photos. A great thread.
