Incredible pics here!
A request if I may....Does anyone have any pics of the Thame Signal box?    Please!

Khris

Thame, Oxfordshire? Here's the gap in 1978! Standard type of box, pictures on this thread of a couple the same.

I have the index done to the end of page 23, but I realised that my colleague was going it in more detail than me, so I am going through the multiple entries separating them out. I am also moving information from the Comments column to the first column where appropriate.

But here is progress to far. I'll work on the rest of the listing  and add page 24 before I upload again.  Now in alphabetical order.

Are there any NE Region boom gates still in use?

Urlay Nook had boom gates to the end when it was replaced/demolished in 2019.

Billingham in in the process of being replaced and the barriers went in first. Boom gates until recently. Billingham used to have a very tall wooden post bracket signal. It gets very windy in the north east. You can see why it was replaced with a much lower steel post assembly.

Hertford East, 31-10-93. Not the clearest, but illustrating one of the more bizarre painting schemes, chocolate and cream front, white ends and NSE red stair banisters. The box is still there despite being long out of use, wearing the remains of this paint job. A move to the Wensleydale Railway is supposedly on the cards.

Who wanted some Scottish ones?

Some piccies of these boxes have been seen before but these are from ground level rather than hanging out of a train window. All of today's from 11 June 1991.

Edit to add, for the benefit of the indexers, that Stranraer and Dunragit are on lines built by the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway and that Barrhill was Glasgow and South Western Railway.

Stranraer (Harbour as was)

Now done up to the end of page 24. I’ll add each page as it is completed. 1148 photos so far, excluding odd signals etc. That';s impressive.

I have had a change of plan. Originally I created one entry for each batch of photos of a particular box by one poster if the photos were taken on the sate date. I have decided that it is best if each photo has its own entry, so where necessary I have added entries and a few words of description to help those who may wish to refer to an individual photo. Photos not of signal boxes or ground frames are mentioned in the notes.

I shall now add each page as it is completed.

Over the weeks I also intend to add more information about the companies which built the boxes, but I may need some help.
There is just one query remaining. There are two boxes just described as Cheltenham, but I believe that there were several boxes there. It will be useful if they can be identified uniquely.

Jonathan

PS Dates corrected - see below.

Also Stockport and Denton

A minor error - my Shirley photos are listed as taken on consecutive years whereas they were from the same day. I suspect it's due to Excel's automatic numbering function.

Actually, if contributors could "scan" through their entries, in the Excel list, then errors can be spotted and extra info added, that others may not see.

I had a quick "sken", through my posts, and can see that Stockport No1, Stockport No2, and Denton Junction were all taken 900 years in the future!

Not sure how that happened.

(Must have been the way LibreOffice and Excel fight each other!)

There was a song written about this place ....

Oh at Pinwherry Station one Saturday night, the moon it was high in the sky
A weary inspector was lying awake for the very last train to go by
But the engine was stuck, for the load was too great. The driver he wasn't depressed.
Take half of them up to the top of the hill; then we'll come back for the rest.

So they shunted them up to the top of the hill, just over the crest at Pinmoore
Then they went back for the rest of the train as they did on occasions before.
Well they'd coupled them up when the message came through; the driver sat down with a groan
All those wagons we'd left at the top of Pinmoore were running away on their own.

Well the runaway wagons started to go when the brake couldn't handle the strain
They shot through the station at Pinwherry Dip with the speed of a passenger train.
Well the rate they were going, it carried them on damn near to the top of the hill
But the gradient won and they came to a stop. For a moment or two they were still.

Ah, but now that the incline was in the reverse, those wagons were rolling once more
Hurtling down to Pinwherry again and all the way back to Pinmoore
Where they came to a stop. But it wasn't for long, and soon they were moving again
And somewhere behind them the driver and guard were searching for half of the train.

Well the wagons go up and the wagons go down, they were doing ten minutes a trip
Till at last they were spent and they came to a rest at the bottom of Pinwherry dip.
Ah, but back at the station, still lying awake, the inspector was cursing the light
Saying, "I'm damned if I knew there were so many trains in the best bloody part of the night."

Thoresby Colliery has two entries for the same photo.

I for one really appreciate the effort that has gone into making up this index.

A couple from North Wales. My parents retired to Deganwy and these two were at the end of the road.

Deganwy Crossing supported on the sea wall.

and the lesser known, Deganwy Quay. Open for fixed hours and released by Deganwy crossing. This gave access to the marina. It was swept away and is now a hotel and housing estate.
