Signal Box Photos

Now with page 25 included and various bits of info added. I have deleted my earlier downloads to avoid confusion.

I can't help feeling that there will be a few quizzes spawned by this thread: ten signal boxes photos shown: where are they?

And the variety is fascinating. Plenty of scope for those wishing to produce etched bargeboards for models.

List deleted, see page 27

If it was a quiz, you'd expect the questioner to know the answers. Looking through my collection, they aren't all named!! :o. I've still got plenty to work through before we get to them though.

Weymouth, August 1981.

Weymouth 2 August 1981 HP5 OM1 216-012.jpg

In the first pic, of Weymouth, is the (point) rodding, just past the end of the platform, going to Detonators or something else?

Looks like it. But why have detonators on a terminal road? And it's on the arrivals side?

To make sure you stop before the buffers perhaps

I don't know Weymouth too well but was heavy sea fog a regular occurrence?

It is a bit odd.

Signalman to Stores manager: "You got any Jays?"

Stores manager: "What do you mean Jays? You mean Jay birds, all squawks and feathers and that?"

"Nah, Jays."

"What, Jeyes fluid? You wanna clean the steps?"

"Nah, Jay for Junction - Letter Jays."

...

With apologies to everyone and in particular Ronnie Barker.

They appear to be on the rail so i'd say the co-act with the points ahead.

Here's a 1979 picture of the box diagram, showing that the detonators do indeed work with the points (33) ahead of them. George Pryer's diagrams suggest that this wasn't provided when the box opened in 1957, so maybe there was a later instance of a driver taking the wrong signal which prompted the addition of the detonators.

Going back to the earlier (much earlier) thread on boxes with a distinct lean on them, here is Meadow Hall box photographed around 1986. This was of ancient Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway design and was on the former Blackburn Valley Line (now a bike trail) near Rotherham. The box was in danger of falling backwards into the Blackburn Brook and had been shored up with substantial timbers.

The signaller told me that one night whilst on duty in the box he was relaxing in his armchair when he was startled by the groaning of the structure quickly followed by a crack like a gunshot as a pane of glass cracked. Needless to say he was out of that box in a flash!

Back to the GE, Spellbrook on the Cambridge line between Sawbridgeworth and  Bishop's Stortford. Taken in 1994 I think. Interesting supplementary lamps on the gates.

I like the finials on that box!

I have just been past the Norton area (Teesside) boxes. All semaphores now LED signals. No trace the Norton West or Billingham boxes ever existed. Portacabin equipment rooms in their place. Norton East, Norton on Tees and Belasis Lane all still in position but not in use. Norton South listed.
