Mesty Croft Signal Box, Wednesbury Town L.M.R., closed 7th December 1964.

It was, according to "A Practical Record of L.N.W.R SIGNALLING", a LNWR Standard Type 4 size C signal cabin capable of housing a Frame with 15 Levers.

A couple from Gloucestershire, Severn Bridge in 1979, and some dumped boxes at Tufts Junction S&WR (site of) in 1994. One of them I believe is the 'rescued' box from Severn Bridge, the Midland box is unknown to me.

Interesting to compare Nunthorpe to how it is today. It is the closest box to my home. It will be around for sometime as it controls the line to Whitby. Housing development behind now and a large nursing home to the left. The left hand line is long escape line, but might have a future life as there is a possibility the line to Guisborough may be reinstated. The frame is located at the back of the box, not the front and the barriers are full length (not half) still operated by the wheel, not motors.1451371789_LNERNunthorpe2007clr.JPG.2aee015adb198dbe80edd6786b995297.JPG1335852806_LNERNunthorpe2007dlr.JPG.1d6f64abb08313c18b303765c3bc77fb.JPG987974501_LNERNunthorpe2007flr.JPG.468b994b893d19c2c00d41eab630ad68.JPG

The reversal at Battersby is now tablet machines in a cupboard on the platform. The right hand machine is the link with Nunthorpe (the left with a similar set up at Glaisdale, the only other passing point before Whitby.

There can't be many wheel worked barriers left by now.

In the area Drifflield and Nunthorpe spring to mind, Kirkham & Weaverthorpe have gates worked by a wheel, Kirkham 3:1 Weaverthorpe 2:1

If I had a pound for every time I've been in these boxes for one reason or another I'd have paid my mortgage off a lot earlier!

Interesting modification there for anybody who doesn't like making external staircases!

I presume one of those new doors in the front leads to an internal staircase.

It was originally a 60 Lever Frame but when the line to Oldham closed, most of these were redundant.

The Frame was reduced to 12 Levers in 1982. The upper End door is still there (without the stairs or landing) - presumably it was "nailed" shut!

This is one of only a handful of boxes that I was ever invited into.

Happy days.

I guess the other door must be the fire exit ??!?

More likely to be for access to the "undercroft" for the S&T.

It finished with five, after the crossover was taken out. I seem to recall that the frame area was partitioned off and the other part became quite "botanical"

When I visited, the cross-over was still in use.

I remember some weekend Engineering jobs requiring the Newcastle - Liverpool - Newcastle services using it to get off the bang road.

Yes, the box was partitioned but I didn't notice anything in the void.

I can't remember when the external steps disappeared.

Block shelf in Banbury North box, August 1995.

Banbury_N_block_shelf_1995

Edit:- I'm sure someone on here will be familiar with these things. Am I right in thinking that the state of the instruments shows a train in each platform of the station, and that Fenny Compton has already accepted the Down train, but that it has not entered the block section?
