Block shelf in Banbury North box, August 1995.

Edit:- I'm sure someone on here will be familiar with these things. Am I right in thinking that the state of the instruments shows a train in each platform of the station, and that Fenny Compton has already accepted the Down train, but that it has not entered the block section?

Looks like yes, it also shows the Bobby has not pegged over to T-O-L and the track circuits have done it for him.

As Beast66606 says you are correct.

The down service is stood in or passing through  the platform ie. in section between Banbury South and Banbury North. The train has been offered on to Fenny Compton and has been accepted and so the signals should be cleared ( and it looks like they are) for the train to depart Northwards.

Once it does, train entering section (2 beats) will be sent to Fenny Compton  and once acknowledged the Fenny signaller will move the block to train on line.

Once the train has passed Banbury North box and the tail lamp observed, signals will be replaced to danger behind it and train out of section sent back to South box and the needle moved to normal once acknowledged.

The whole process can then start again for the next train.

It was quite a busy box in its final years

In Banbury South the Down Relief line had, I believe, the last surviving Spagnoletti block instrument in use on Network Rail.

Indeed it did. Go back to my post on page 3 and you'll find a photo of said instrument.

Thanks gents. I spent a very interesting hour or two in Banbury N and Fenny Compton boxes, as part of preparation for my final year University project.

I've added a few more that I took that day, descriptions are in the Flickr description boxes. First photo was taken before the one I posted above, and shows the Down train offered and accepted by North box, but not in section.

A couple from the Mid Hants 1994. Alresford, Medstead and Four Marks. Trains were running, but it was snowing that day! You can see the snow through the window.

Some Photos I took in South Wales in the 1980s

First two are Aber Junction signal box north of Caerphilly.  It closed not long after I took these photos when the line (the Big Hill)  to Taffs Well closed.

One hidden away in London is Dudding Hill, junction for the north/south option with Cricklewood from the cross London line to Clapham Junction. It is not a high speed rout but has has a switched diamond. When I was there, last year, the home/distant was still in use with the working distant for another hidden box next to Wembley/Neasdon.

A couple from Gloucestershire, Severn Bridge in 1979, and some dumped boxes at Tufts Junction S&WR (site of) in 1994. One of them I believe is the 'rescued' box from Severn Bridge, the Midland box is unknown to me.

I'm wondering if the unidentifiedMidland 'box is the one in the background of a photo I took at Norchard ( 20/4/87 ) - but where's it from ?230_06x.jpg.d4d5ebfe641b4768f4989461e4eb9b10.jpg

The Severn Bridge one could well be the 'box now at Whitecroft ( 6/7/19 )

This one is from Wimbledon Park which the Pre-Group Atlas says was an ex LSWR line but now seems to be part of the LUL District Line. 9 Nov 1989

Very pleased to see the old box at Wimbledon Park which I visited a number of times in my youth. I lived nearer to Southfields which is the next station up the line towards East Putney. Do you by any chance have any photos of Southfields signal box?
