The road passing over, with the access steps leading down, was Picton Road - https://goo.gl/maps/Y7uzYUUjLJtFPCfi9

There's some dispute on that one, Beast, as some say it's Wavertree Road. The snag is finding where Wavertree Road, to the northwest, ends and Picton road, to the southeast begins. There are no street name plates on the bridge itself - I've looked - and maps, Google and so on are very unclear on the subject.

Personally, I'm with you and call it Picton Road; why else would the LNWR have so named the box if it wasn't?

It's not that uncommon a situation.  Pontypool Road station wasn't on Pontypool Road, the street is called Station Approach (and the station is now called Pontypool & New Inn).   But that was the Great Western for you - stick "Road" after the name of the settlement the station purported to serve if the village was miles away from the line.

ECML bridge No 102 over the A505 near my local station, Hitchin, is generally referred to as "Walsworth Road Bridge", but maps and  the roadsigns show the name changing to Cambridge Road about 20 yards before reaching the railway.  Coincidentally the station itself is also on a street called Station Approach.

Originally Picton Road extended through the overbridge, and the High Street started from Wellington Road.

Nah - can't be  .......  MY local station's on Station Approach an' it's nowhere near Hitchin !

There's a Station approach in Derby as well. How many 'London Road Junction' signal boxes can you think of? I can immediately think of three within 30 miles of each other.

Interesting signal hoods, we're they something to do wartime blackout regulations?

I'd think that the location makes the hoods necessary for the signals to be visible to drivers heading directly into the setting sun.

Rising?

Either? Albeit with different signals at different times of the day?

I'm not familiar with the location and took a punt on which way round the box was....

Par was on page 10 (much later), here in 1997, with St Blazey and Goonbarrow Junction. The single token is out for Newquay. Is that a certain Captain Kernow of this parish I spy in Par?

Great photos but they look like they’ve been published before so is it OK to reproduce them here?
