Might bring back memories to former S&T chaps here. Brilliant post! I wasn't S&T but knew a few of the faces in the second film. I thought I saw Roy Bell, and then he was credited with writing the script! And Peter Flook as cameraman is also a name from the past. I think I saw Vic Cross, one of the signalmen, who had moved to London Bridge when I knew him, and in one of the early site meetings there was Dennis Mutton, Area Inspector. 2

Poor Old Bruce
Yeovil Junction in 1988 but it looks, to me, to be Great Western* in style. Why would there be a GWR box at the side of the LSWR main line? *Edit: See following posts Edited July 9, 2021 by Poor Old Bruce
RMweb Premium 4069 Posted July 7, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 7, 2021 It's an LSWR box (opened in 1908 as Yeovil Jn East, renamed Yeovil Jn A in 1949) which was fitted with WR-pattern windows in the BR period, probably around 1967 when the box was given a WR lever frame. Subsequent to your photo, the windows were replaced by oddly-proportioned plastic versions of the GWR style, making the box look even stranger. It closed on 12 March 2012.

Wickham Green too
Except, of course, the L.S.W.R. wouldn't have recognised any such designation as 'Type 4' for their signal boxes.

In the second photo it looks like the mop bucket is hanging off a post on the stairs landing, so I agree that the stairs are at the back (as opposed to being inside). What is even more interesting (to me at least) is the 'phone box on the outer wall facing the running line. Signed as an SPT but no signal in view. If a loco/unit was stopped there, it would be easier for the driver just to shout to the 'bobby' through the window. Obviously there for an operational reason, but not immediately clear why.

RMweb Gold roundhouse Posted July 15, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2021 I remember Barnstaple box well along with others on the route in the 80's visiting them with friends, some on the forum. Wish that I had seen many others in the area that had gone beforehand.

RMweb Gold Not Jeremy Posted July 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 16, 2021 They are all such fascinating if not beautiful structures, not least Harling Road, thank for sharing more pictures of it. What a lovely building, full of architectural detail and a quality of construction that you just don't get any more, least of all on structures destined for the use of the public. A great shame it is to go, If I ever won the lottery I'd buy it and remove to elsewhere and rebuild it. I don't do the Lottery, but that is of course nothing against Harling Road 1
