......... - would that be West Goods box cowering under the bracket ?                                                                                                                                                                         That wasn't an entirely rhetorical question - can anyone confirm whether it is, please ?

Come to that, where is Griff Junction?

First thought was somewhere in Wales, and the bobby would be called Rhys Jones.....

A couple of poor shots ( as far as signal boxes are concerned ) at Reading 17/8/86 : 43.171 departing for Penzance ( 08.45 from Pad.)  ...... 1967 Panel Box in the background of the first and Main Line West box ( I presume ) to the left of the going-away - would that be West Goods box cowering under the bracket ?

You presume correctly; Reading Main Line West and Reading Goods Line West boxes.

Dorking, formerly Dorking North, as it was when commissioned in 1938 for the electrification of the Mid-Sussex line to Bognor Regis and Havant, where it met the Portsmouth Direct electrification.

Colour lights and power points - but still absolute block to the the boxes either side. The lush greenery in the background used to be EMU berthing sidings, from the days when Southern Railway established berthing points at every terminus and key station. Modern attitudes to traincrew management suggested that remote booking-on was not wise, and all these hole-in-the-wall berthing places got zapped, with ECS moves to/from main depots instead.

I think this was 1st July 2012.

Rainford Junction is the start of the single line section to Kirkby, and one of the few places left on the network that still has a token and block instrument.  More details here.

Modern attitudes to other people's property and the availability of cans of spray paint probably had a lot to do with closing stabling sidings too !
