Signal Box Photos

Sorry  -  must've blinked !

My reply was quite short. Sorry about that. The perils of trying to do too many things at once.

There are so many photos on here it is easy to miss some or to forget what has already appeared.

Repeats are interesting in that you can see the changes over the time between the photos of what are are rapidly becoming a rare item on the network

It is also fascinating the boxes  I have missed photographing  because  the train was my focus,  I  didn't know  were there , didn't appreciate them or I  was just too young.

I would never have thought those south of Stratford upon Avon lasted so long.

The more pics the merrier I say.

Just a trick of the light but that 141 looks like it's got a van tacked on behind, like old DMUs used to have

Indeed just a trick of the light from the shadow of the overbridge.

I have been thinking about the long term preservation of this material. It is a very valuable collection but RMWeb is rather ephemeral., in that once posts to a topic end it gets buried.

I wonder if there is a book in it. I am associated with the HMRS but I cannot say whether it would be interested in such a book. I don't think privately publishing via Amazon is any good as the quality of colour reproduction is not good enough. And there is the issue that it would be necessary to get formal approval from all those who have contributed, and exclude those where the copyright holder is not the person who posted (or at least his/her permission cannot be obtained). I have not posted some of the photos of signal boxes I possess because they are not my copyright.

But if there is sufficient interest I could approach the HMRS Trustees and ask if they are interested. I can't promise a fortune for anyone!

I have just come across this thread. I do think that signal boxes have a charm all their own and we have lost so many of them. I spent an hour or so leafing through these 19 pages, most enjoyable, I noticed not too many Scottish boxes.

I did start a similar thread on the Scottish threads some time ago but thought the wider audience might appreciate some of the pictures that i posted there.

This is Rogart on the Far North Line in 2019. The box not in use, it is in private ownership.

Cheers

David

This is the box on the preserved line at Boness.

It is the ex Garnqueen South Junction box, (a Caledonian Railway box) relocated to Boness by the SRPS. Drawings of this box as it is now appeared in the April 2012 Railway Modeller. Pictures taken in 2018.

There are some Scottish boxes in the pipeline, so keep watching.

Yes, there's enough material out there for a book or two - maybe HMRS or, perhaps the Signalling Record Society ........... meanwhile, here's another assorted handful …… West Ruislip ; 17/11/83, another trio from west London ; 11/12/84, two for the price of one at Llandudno Junction ; 9/3/85 and – a little later / a little further east - Inguru-Oya & Nanu-Oya in Sri Lanka ; 21/1/14.

Thanks for posting these 'Bruce', brings back many very happy memories. As a trainee S&T tech during the mid 70s I had a 6 month spell with the York-Malton lineman, whose area started the York side of Burton Lane SB (taking in the Foss Islands branch/Rowntree Halt) and finished just the York side of Malton station.  Sheer heaven to work on that section of line.

This box has caught my attention before. I believe it opened around 1944? The asbestos roof is the same as Soham. We needed to repair the roof on Soham and the replacement asbestos parts required came off a building being demolished in RAF Lakenheath. I wonder if the material was from America or of a specification used by them on their buildings built over here?

Apparently the box and the station were opened in 1944. Since you asked about it, here is the station building - same asbestos roof.
