Signal Box Photos

Ah another group of photo's where i have left a trail of destruction, except Wymondham South Junction but that is only a matter of time..

No, far from it.

You've actually done a hell of a lot to help preserve the essential workings of boxes that the railway management no longer sees as an economically viable  part of their business model.  Demolition of these obsolete boxes was inevitable, and you have managed a fantastic salvage operation, not merely by moving a good number of redundant signalboxes and/or lever frames from A to B.  Quite a few preserved railways would be a lot the poorer without your contribution,  whether by sourcing obsolete parts or giving volunteers the benefit of largely self-taught knowledge of historic technology where the industry has lost the skills.  And that's quite apart from maintaining equipment particularly on those parts of the national network that aren't yet following the latest fad.

Thank you Mike. I was told when I started on the railway not to bother thinking about mechanical s**t as it would all be gone by the time I’d finished training.

I had to nip out and have a look at this a few weeks back...

I recall in the late '80s a rather bombastic paper written by the Southern Regional S&T Engineer, extolling the excellent progress being made in developing modern signalling systems, and indicating that, just as you say, mechanical stuff was obsolete and would soon be gone. The entire SR had only two locking fitters, despite a fair number of mechanical boxes still in use, between Ramsgate and Exeter (the WoE main line had come back to Southern in 1984). Training on traditional signalling was being back-pedalled, not least because the youngsters reasonably expected to be working with the future, not the past.

Then Clapham happened, and the RS&TE was taken out of post and replaced in a hurry.....

I’ve just been discussing with the boss another mechanical job where something needs adjustment as part of the works. They are having trouble finding someone to do it so it looks like it will be me. I was supposed to test it.
He asked what I was up to on my day off. I sent this picture...

The beauty of that mechanical stuff is that if it breaks, someone with a modicum of skill and knowledge can rustle up a new part in the machine shop or weld a broken  bit back together.

Making a computer chip in the workshop is a little more involved and you can't guarantee being able to buy a replacement as it is probably obselete after 5 years if not less.

I wonder how many of the modern installations will still be doing sterling work in 2121

Oops, whats going on with that distant?

It was a brief moment in time. The distant was motor operated and the home by mechanical wire. When the home was restored the distant motored back to caution.

Certainly looks like Green Road; picture taken in 2013, box no longer there.  Station building just visible on the right.

Zoom in on the right, between the bridge and the crossing and the base of the lattice post signal is still there, just to the left of the legs holding the notice.

Does this count as a signal box?

It has levers, that control signals.

Woody Bay on the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway.  25/6/2009

cheers

Well, it does accept trains, and the line carries passengers, so I'd be inclined to say yes. Remember that it needs to satisfy HMRI for safety, rules, etc.

Its the innards of a signal motor. As usual, massively engineered for a simple job, but in doing so they last for years...

I have a plan for one....
