RMweb Premium iands Posted November 3, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 3, 2021 No surprises that the last in this little Sleaford 'fest' is Sleaford West, a GN 'box of c1880. Date of first photo 23/01/2008 21/12/2005 (A slightly different angle to show the gates which only "closed off" one side of the road, the other side being "open" to the railway). 20/06/2007 21/12/2005 (This shows the "open to the railway" side with no gates at this side of the road). 23/05/2007 (Same view but a different time of the year and everywhere looks greener - even the four-foot of the Up shunt spur). 21/12/2005 21/12/2005 21/12/2005
RMweb Premium iands Posted November 4, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 4, 2021 Continuing with other locations. Spalding No.1, a GN 'box of 1921 taken on 21/06/1999. A couple of Stow Park, another GN 'box of 1877 taken on 08/06/1999. And finally for today, Swinderby a Midland 'box of 1901 taken on 09/06/1999.
Tim V
One thing this thread has shown me is the diverse range of current boxes elsewhere in the country - they have practically been eliminated here. Nearest is Yeovil Pen Mill at 43 miles!

I haven't got a photo, but will try to get one in the next couple of days. 1

RMweb Gold rodent279 Posted November 5, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 5, 2021 (edited) As promised, here are a few photos of a happier looking Warmley SB. Warmly SB by Mr Ratty, on Flickr Warmly SB by Mr Ratty, on Flickr Warmly SB by Mr Ratty, on Flickr Warmly SB by Mr Ratty, on Flickr And finally, I know it's not a signal box, but here is the station at Warmley, now nicely done up and doing good business as Warmley Waiting Room cafe. The railway is now the Bristol-Bath cycle path, and the cafe is popular with cyclists, runners and normals. Anyone passing though, or visiting the Avon Valley Railway, is well recommended to pay it a visit. Oldland Common station, the northern terminus of the AVR, is just over a mile from Warmley station, straight along the cycle path. Bitton station is a mile further. RMweb Premium iands Posted November 5, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 5, 2021 A bit later than planned, todays pics. Wainfleet 24/06/1999. A GN 'box of 1899. West Holmes (Lincoln) 08/06/1999. GE/GN 'box of 1882. And a couple of West Street Junction (Boston), both taken on 23/06/1999. A GN 'box of 1874. (I'll admit now that the 'box was not the main topic of the second photo).
RMweb Premium iands Posted November 6, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 6, 2021 Today's selection. A shuttered Whitwell Station 'box taken on 18/04/1996. The 'box is an 1893 vintage and I think a Midland design, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got this wrong. (The 'box was closed in the early 1990s and was finally demolished in the late 1990s under the Worksop area EROS project). Wickenby 09/06/1999. A MS&L 'box of 1890. (With yours truly (at the bottom of the steps) chatting to the signaller). You may have noticed that my recent postings up 'til now on this thread have been (more or less) in alphabetical order, this is where this endeavour falls apart as not all the photos in my archive (from my working days) are not all in one place for some reason. However, I'll post the errant ones randomly as I find them. The first of the errant photos are two photos of Littleworth taken on 21/06/1999. A GN 'box of 1875.

Michael Hodgson
It is notable in that view that much of the aperture for wires and rodding has been bricked up, with just a few small openings left. That presumably cut down considerably the draughts in the box. 2

RMweb Premium iands Posted November 8, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 8, 2021 Sorry I didn't post any photos yesterday, had my Covid booster + Flu jabs on Saturday and it knocked me for six yesterday. However, back to it today. Poor Old Bruce provided a couple of 'distance' photos of Somerleyton back on page 33. Mine are somewhat closer. All are taken on 19/06/2002. The 'box is a GE design of 1907. One of POBs photos shows the gradient up to the bridge. This shot shows a more exaggerated view of the gradient (due to the effects of the zoom lens). The gradient either side of the bridge is 1-in-80. And for pure indulgence on my part, a shot of the bridge "lifted" just prior to swinging - thought it might be of interest.

RMweb Premium iands Posted November 9, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2021 Today's selection. A couple of Skegness (to complement the one posted by @Wickham Green too on page 59), a GN design of 1882. Although the second one is somewhat of a distant shot - the reason for the photo originally was to show the relationship of the 'box to the NRN mast on the left. Photos taken on 24/06/1999 Hemingbrough early 2000s (sorry, exact date not recorded. Ignore the date on the photo, it is wrong). The purpose of the photo wasn't actually to record the 'box but the fact that the lights for the CCTV crossing were on in broad daylight. This was at the time of the Selby area EROS project and the D&B contractor had messed-up somewhat to such an extent that the lighting control circuit had to be bypassed resulting in the lights being permanently "on" 24/7. It took the best part of a year to get the issue resolved, resulting in quite a hefty electricity bill! 14
micknich2003
Ian, can't find my notes, nut pretty sure Hemmingbrough closed c1998. Are you coming to the Hull exhibition this weekend? I'm there with my "Toybox".

You've got me thinking now. The CCTV lighting control might have been carried out by the "maintenance" arm rather than the "D&B" bit of the same company (I won't mention it to protect the innocent), but that would have been just prior to the EROS project. I'll see if I can make Hull this weekend, if I can get my jobs done and earn a few brownie points! Hoefully will see you there.
RMweb Premium iands Posted November 10, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 10, 2021 Still finding a few errant 'boxes misfiled in the archive. A couple of views of Abergavenny. A GW 'box of 1934. The first photo is a general view taken during the summer of 2011. And the second from the Up side 13/01/2012. Picton, on the Leeds-Northern route between Low Gates (Northallerton) and Eaglescliffe. Unsure of the date of the photo but it would have been during my Railtrack days, so I'm thinking about 1996 (not long before it closed in 1997). It was an NER box built in 1872, although the date on the 'box itself clearly states 1873 (I suspect the later date is when it became operational).
RMweb Gold Harlequin Posted November 10, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 10, 2021 Inside Abergavenny signal box, May 1992 - and outside briefly at the beginning where you can see it is in need of some work:
RMweb Premium iands Posted November 12, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 12, 2021 I think these two 'boxes are the last in my archive. My take on Elsham, a GC box c1910ish (I think). Sorry I'm unable to confirm the actual date of the photos, but I think they were around 1999/2000. ... and finally Ulceby. Another GC 'box of around 1910. Again around 1999/2000. 15
