Suppose I had best start compiling my thoughts on these, first impressions are positive though.

I have to say, those do look the part, even if they're not accurate Stroudleys. No doubt an expert could point out a hundred reasons why I'm wrong, but they're not bad for what they are. I'd be quite tempted, except I'm working on a rake of repainted Bachmann Red Coaches that I started some time around June.

and there is nothing wrong with Bachmann Red Coaches, they have served me well for many years, and they don't look too bad next to the new Hornby ones, but they are definitely cruder. The Hornby's are a lot closer to Stroudley's than even I expected!

Altogether, they're decent models, reasonable representations of Stroudley stock. An enterprising modeller may try to modify them further to Billinton outline

How close is the NBR colour to that of the LBSC?

Has a surprise this afternoon, postie with the GW baggage brake from Time Tunnel -  ordered Thursday evening on free economy delivery for which the label on the parcel was RM 48hr which I have never known to include Saturdays or Sundays.

I shall have to be careful not to type NE for MR!

Anyway, what about @BlueLightning's review?

I think it's fair comment.  It's probably reasonable to expect the current Hornby to be 'better' than a Bachmann coach derived from a TTTE range.

Horses for courses of course(s).  My intention is to use both Hornby and Hattons 4 wheel coaches to represent a miner's workman's train running in South Wales in the early fifties, and I might have to use Ratio kit bodies for the brake 3rds because neither Hattons, Hornby, or Bachmann make any 4 wheeler that looks the correct outline for a Dean 4 wheel brake 3rd. I need to use the RTR underframes and chassis as the train has to negotiate a no.3 radius curve on one of my fiddle yard roads, and Ratios won't do this.  The real train was 4 Dean era coaches in BR crimson under a hefty layer of crud, a BT, T, BT, and a T with a lower roof profile, the BTs with the brake ends facing 'outwards'.  On the face of it, the 3 coaches can be Hattons and the fourth Hornby, but Hornby and Hattons decision to go with the LBSC type of ducket and end window arrangement (I know other railways used this as well) does not play to this idea at all.  The Bachmanns are derived from Annie and Clarabelle and the brake 3rd is also unsuitable.

Well Maude has just got a train, I agree with much of what’s been said, the moulding is a little ‘soft’ in places but a nice model at a reasonable price.
One thing thought RM tested out Hornby’s packaging to the limit as they were in a Jiffy bag! I’ve informed the retailer with a picture as a heads up and fortunately the coach was undamaged.

The coach may not be damaged but the box certainly was. Unbelievable that a retailer packaged the item(s) so badly :excl: Hope I never buy a model railway product from that retailer :nono:

You may have as it one of the larger ones, first problem I’ve had with it from them and I’ve used them a fair bit, there is a National shortage of card boxes at present though so it may be because of that they are struggling for packaging ;) I’ve told them and no doubt will get a reply as their customer service has always been excellent.

Cardboard shortage,

Good point! Agree with you that I probably have in that case :D

But even in the absence of a cardboard box due to the current shortage, I would used plenty of bubble wrap around the item first and then used "brown paper and string" (well perhaps not the string ) as a flat-pack type envelope is sort of hinting that the item can be squashed a bit without any harm. It always seems a pity to me that one can't easily return the unspoilt cardboard boxes back to the retailers rather than take them to the tip (en masse) for "recycling". (I used to recycle black sacks full of polystyrene chips to one auctioneer of Dublo items years ago as I had so many.)
