Built at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath factory, 314 Mk4 coaches were produced between 1989 and 1992. They were built specifically for use on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line, along with hopes that a second order for the West Coast Main Line would be placed at a later date, although this second order never transpired. Mk4 coaches featured many improvements over the Mk3s such as push-button operated plug-type doors, fully sealed gangways and a designed top speed of 140mph. Much of the Mk4 design was based upon the Advanced Passenger Train. In particular, Mk4 coaches feature sides profiled to allow a tilt of up to 6° with newly fitted tilting bogies.

Mk4’s entered service in 1989 and helped drive a significant increase in passenger traffic. With privatisation in 1996, all Mk4 coaches were sold to Evershot Rail Group who have since leased them out to the holder of the InterCity East Coast Franchise. The franchise was initially awarded to Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) and has since been operated by National Express East Coast, East Coast, Virgin Trains East Coast and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) owned by the Department for Transport.

Between October 2003 and November 2005 Bombardier Transportation, under contract from GNER, commenced refurbishment of the Mk4 stock, fitting new seating arrangements and introduced onboard Wi-Fi, a first for British rail services. This refurbishment programme was called ‘Project Mallard’ named after the Mallard steam locomotive, built in the 1930s by the London & North Eastern Railway and holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives.

Although Mk4 coaches have spent most of their lives on the ECML, there are plans to cascade them down to other lines due to the introduction of the Class 800 and Class 801 IEPs.

The prices are good by modern standards, looking at maybe £32 ish with discounts.

I assume the standard will be more akin to that of their MK2F range though ie not a bells and whistles Cavalex level model but a hopefully serious and affordable step up from the ancient Margate tooling of the past?

To quickly say that the single dummy HST power car is a good idea, I shall certainly buy one as it remained like that for many years after use with the Mk4's on ECML.

The HST power cars were surrogate DVTs on Mk.3s, they didn't work with Mk.4s.

Yes, that all seems a little confused from listening to the video! The HST power cars (not Mk3 DVTs!) ran with Mk3 sets and a 91 at the other end, essentially a HST with one power car replaced by  new 91. A Mk4 set needs a Mk4 DVT!

The Mark 3’s are at least already in the range - R40002-5. Only thing is, the TGS doesn’t have buffers - TGS’ modified to work with 91’s we’re fitted with headstocks and buffers IIRC, I doubt many will mind though.

I can see the dummy PC selling very well, not just for use with 91’s but can be posed on shed, or dragged around a layout in a stock move by another loco e.g. to/from works. Might get one myself!

Haven’t seen any mention of TTS chips this year but you’d hope Hornby do a 91 TTS chip, I reckon that would sound pretty ace in a model.

Is this powered or unpowered

The 43 is unpowered.

I'm pleased the mk4s and DVT look like a full retool. Now I need to think about how long a train I want...

Why did they need to fit the TGS with Buffers?

AFAIK they never used them when coupling to the 91s - just used the Buckeye and Pullman Gangways

EDIT - The TGS did have buffers :o - Just spotted a picture in another thread

I'm looking forward to the GNER 225 set. Not much else in the range for late 90s/early 00s, but hopefully if the GNER 225 set sells well they'll produce a GNER 125 set next year.

The buffered single car 43 is a good choice. I've suggested this in the past. I think it'll sell well, being more affordable than a twin pack. Hopefully they'll do buffered 43065 in Virgin livery at some point (it hauled the last Virgin HST I was on). Lima used to do well selling single HST power cars.

Really pleased to see these. I thought it fairly likely that some Mark 4s would be on their way, given last year's announcement of the Class 91s, but was a little worried they might have re-used the existing tooling.

Will be getting a rake of InterCity Mark 4s + DVT. Trying to work out if I can justify a GNER set as well; I always liked that livery.

Without wanting to start talking about next year I think a GNER 373 would also be a good shout.

GNER is one of the best privatisation liveries IMO. It's simple and looks really smart.

I wonder if hot off the heels of this announcement we will have the 89 announced by Rails? GNER Mk4s must have been a factor in it.

Any suggestions as to how best do 5 coaches in LNER? I have a 5 coach train at just over 2m with a loco and DVT.

I know I need a coach B to go behind the loco.

I am thinking either 2 standard 1 kitchen 2 first or 3 standard 1 kitchen 1 first. Probably the latter. Is the first that goes onto the DVT any different to the normal firsts? I'd likely go with BCFHM if M is specifically for the DVT end.

A HST DVT was still a HST power car.

it applied power, indeed some of the fastest recorded runs on the ECML was DVT+91 combos. I was just watching this last night.

Theres one clip here where the 91 has packed in, and the solitary car is screaming on its own with the train.

At rrp £70...

i’ll be buying a few of these and powering them up from older r27xx releases. I can see a bunch of older dummy sets of class 43’s on ebay down the road.

interesting choice to do the power car, but no mk3’s to go with it... they didnt go with mk4’s.

I will certainly be getting one (assuming I eventually get a pair of Class 43s) as I've fancied a buffer-fitted PC but can't justify buying a complete powered pair!

Puzzled with the Transport for Wales Mk4s - Believe these will only run as 4 car sets (Plus Loco and DVT) so not sure why Hornby are doing what is basically a similar size rake as to that which run with the 91s? Hopefully I am missing something ...

Still ... Very good to see some new Mk4s though announced today ... Well not so good on the wallet but very welcome news either way.

Slightly O/T but does the 91's pantograph hit something at 2:32 or is it just a trick of the light? It seems to jump and there's a clang noise at the same time - coincidence?

Can you explain about the "full retool" please

The mk4s, rather than being a reissue of the existing which was spoken about.

Sorry I have qualified that on the OP now, reading back it sounds like I am talking about the dummy HST which I expect is what you thought I was on about.
