Hi I'm finding it very hard to find pictures  of the internal  ends of the very elusive units the only oicturs I have found is at Doncaster works while being converted has anyone got any pictures while in service

Also  were they permanently coupled as a pair ?

Any information  on these would be grateful

Regards daz

Can't yet find a pic of the whole end but these two views would suggest there's a control jumper cable on the l/h end of one vehicle and a corresponding socket on the r/h end of the other vehicle. Judging by the design of the cable & dummy socket, these may be the original ones used when they were cl.501.

Possibly plain ends, as they were non-gangwayed, unless a door has been fitted to the ends.

Otherwise, original end fittings i.e buffers, screw couplings and air brake & main reservoir pipes

I don't think the vehicles were permanently coupled together but  were usually used in set pairs (esp. if the control jumpers were arranged as above, you'd need one with a jumper cable and the other with a socket)

Was searching for pics but came across the 'driver's manual' for the units at locodocs.co.uk:

http://locodocs.co.uk/brmanuals/97Class97-7LocomotivesGenDataStaticDutiesFaultFinding1981-1.htm

(Click 'Next' to go through the pages)

From the description given in the Introduction:

Units can move singly but operate in pairs (one 'A' unit and one 'B' unit)

Screw-coupled with air-brakes and control jumper connected.

Access doors provided on inner ends with a gangway bridge plate between units.

Annoyingly a pic/drawing of the inner ends is not provided!

Still looking for a photo.

This pair of pictures also shows 97703 and 97704 but from the other side. The first picture doesn't really add anything to the pictures linked to by @keefer. Even-numbered ("B"?) units appear not to have ladders on the inside ends. However, you can just see the top of the ladder on 97703, meaning it has one on either side.

They also had the standard EP brake as well as the Westinghouse air brake.

I worked on them a couple of times when I was 2ndman at Kings Cross. Yes they had connecting doors between the 2 cars. they were used on the Northern city Line when it was being rebuilt and OHLE work on the main lines.
