The Quirky Poll 2020

Hello everyone

We ran the first Quirky Poll in conjunction with our friends Andy York & Phil Parker of RMweb last year and many of you found it to be just what we intended… ‘a little bit of Christmas fun’!

You will find below a list of 25 items – many of which are your suggestions – each with a link to a photo and/or further detail. The ‘actual Poll’ can be accessed via the usual banner headline entry at the top of the page (Andy will load that during the afternoon if not already there).

You may tick as many items as you like, but – although this is ‘Christmas fun’ – they must be items that you would realistically wish to buy if they were ever made (as you used to do with The 00 Wishlist Poll) – it is not to decide ‘the quirkiest’.

Within the 25 items we have re-listed two of The Top 3 from last year. We also listed Rocket last year – the top-voted item – and that was subsequently introduced by Hornby.

We won’t say what it is for fear of ‘influencing’ you, but we have specifically listed one item on behalf of our one-time team-mate, Glen Woods, who sadly passed away in November. We know he would have loved to see it in – it really is quirky!

OK…stop working and get quirking! You have until 21.00 on Wednesday 30 December 2020 to vote. We aim to publish the results in the usual Poll Team format as soon as we can on 1 January 2021 – look for the title: Results – The Quirky Poll 2020.

Merry Christmas and a Safe & Happy New Year to you all!

The Poll Team

Robert Carroll, Chris Knowles-Thomas, John Lewis, Jeff Lynn, Brian Macdermott, Nick Stanbury & Ian Taylor

Below is ‘The Guide’ to the 25 items – access to the actual Poll is via the usual banner headline notification at the top of the page (which Andy will load during the afternoon).

I think we should allow posts about what we think is the quirkiest as well as voting for what we'd actually buy.  The Adkins Lewis is pretty quirky, but the Listowel and Ballybunion is so quirky (how quirky is it, Johnster?), so quirky it could quirk for Earth in the interplanetary Olympics.  How about a working model South Devon 'Atmospheric', operated by suction?  Volks Electric has to be somewhere in the quirky as well, along with any Belgian steam loco...

And of course the Bennie Railplane.

Hello Baz

I don't buy that 'we have it in' for Judith Edge Kits. Some are suggestions from us; other suggestions were from voters last year.

Hello Johnster

I will put the idea of voting for 'the quirkiest' to The Team but initially feel that it would complicate matters. We are 'following on' from what was The 00 Wishlist Poll which was always for what voters would realistically wish to buy.

The Benne Railplane was on last year but found itself towards the bottom of the Low Polling segment. I'll put the South Devon and Volks Electric on the Agenda for you though.

I rather like the clever oes like the Listowel & Ballybunion and the Wuppertal Danglebahn,  Noting how some folk supplying (or aiming to supply)  r-t-r models seem to owe a lot of their 'original ideas' to polls and wish lists I suspect that there'll be something in there which is announced in r-t-r between now and early January 2022 ;) :jester:

Great stuff as ever thanls Briab.

You're missing the other two GWR 0-6-4CTs.

There was also 16 Hercules and 17 Cyclops.

Hello Jason

Not specifically 'missed' but listed from a suggestion. As with the old 'main' Poll, we make the assumption that any maker would 'get what they can' from any tooling to expand the sales possibilities.

They were identical though. Just wondering why one is mentioned but not the others. Considering it was Hercules that was the most famous example.

It's just an 850 Class 0-6-0PT with extended frames and a crane on the back and no dome.

I love this!

Locomotion, Titfield Thunderbolt and Wren for me, but I don't want to influence others so I will stay anonymous for this.

Not Kev.

Herpa did the new GTW 'Danglewagen' in H0 a year or three back, unpowered but with potential.

And joswood.de do the various river and street portals in H0 among their laser cut range.

Fancy offering us Fowler's ghost when we don't even have a Metropolitan A Class.

I'd be tempted by any early indirect-drive locomotive, but the Blenkinsop locomotive would need its own dedicated track. I wonder if the rack was only on one side, a bit like 3rd rail. I suppose it would have to be, on curves at least.

Hello CloggyDog

Thanks very much - we weren't aware of that. Perhaps there is potential?

It was, one of  several problems of the system from memory of reading up on it was twisted track I guess uneven torque (f that is the right word) with the power always being on the same side would do that twisting. A modern cast wheel set, but from the original patterns so is a genuine Blenkinsop wheel set, is in the NRM at York. It was on display last time I was there but that was a while back now due to COVID stopping my York family visits this year.
