paul59
Hi all and Merry Christmas . Just trying to work a part of the dock system into a track plan and i was wondering how the locos were turned round at the Ocean Terminal in the 1950's. RMweb Premium petethemole Posted December 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2020 There was a turntable and servicing point at Southampton Terminus, but as far as I'm aware, the locos off the down boat trains were serviced at Eastleigh.
RMweb Gold john new Posted December 26, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 26, 2020 Drummond's book on Southampton Docks is not very clear about working the ECS trains although it does state getting main line locos out of the docks was a priority. Middlesea John
I believe the locos worked down from Eastleigh tender first.
bécasse
11 hours ago, Middlesea John said: I believe the locos worked down from Eastleigh tender first. Strictly speaking, they worked to and from Eastleigh tender first - which was standard Southern practice for working locos between termini and the loco depots that serviced them, the tender-first locos sometimes working ECS, rather than just being LE, if that suited the operational requirement on the day.
paul59
Thanks for the replies, really appreciate the information. So I guess on a run to Waterloo the the loco would use the turntable there, then once back at Southampton return to Eastleigh for service. I will order the Ian Drummond book i think..... bécasse
In London, the loco would be serviced (turned, coaled, watered, etc) at Nine Elms depot. It was unusual at Waterloo for train locos to handle ecs, a fleet of M7s, Panniers, H16s, etc were retained for working ecs between Waterloo and Clapham Junction (or more rarely sidings further out).
