Through the Bay of E I have acquired another Craftsman Midland 0-4-4T 1P kit for a good price, slightly less than the one which started this thread. It's a round top version so should go well with stable mates 1303 and 1424. I've also got a bid in for an M7 chassis to go under a CDC Design "Stanier" 2P so wish me luck. I think I have the beginnings of a complex for 0-4-4 tanks!

I won the M7. I was in for two but luckily was outbid on the second, I didn't want two. I have ordered an LMS 2P 0-4-4 tank body from CDC Designs. Both should be here by the end of the week.

The Craftsman 0-4-4T 1P was delivered this morning and I had completely forgotten there were wheels with the kit, so am well-please with the purchase price. The kit is different from the Craftsman Belpaire version as the footplate and tanks are white metal whereas the Belpaires are brass so hopefully less weight will need to added. Just need High Level Kits to get on track with gearbox orders.

The Hornby M7 arrived today and was matched with the CDC Designs 2P body this afternoon. A couple of repairs were carried out on the chassis first - a broken wire to the bogie pick-up wipers and the peg which held the bogie in place had sheered off. The sand pipes to the front wheels were missing too. The wheels were painted black. The brake rodding is incorrect and will be sorted. The body paint finish is very matt and I might respray with Halford's Matt Black just to get a slight sheen. Here is the unliveried 2P with its 1P predecessor. The lamp irons might get replaced as they are very thick, as is the front smokebox handrail.

Another Craftsman 1P turned up a couple of days ago. It was ready built with wheels, motor and gearbox and was on eBay. At less than 100 notes I thought I had a bargain. It was advertised as working but needed attention. On my DC test track it stuttered along. Wheels were dirty and the one-sided current nickel silver wipers were so stiff they acted as brakes. The worm and gear had grub screws so all was disassembled and lubricated. The wipers were removed and will be replaced with phosphor bronze. The axles and crank pins were lubed and all ran well with the motor terminals connected to the controller. The model was back heavy and on turning the superstructure over the bunker had been filled with lead. The only way to get some of it out was to use a succession of different sized drill bits in my electric drill. Quite a bit was removed.

DSCF8370.JPG.9256f1db2beb2d7391dced895c041053.JPG

There's now room for a slim sugar cube speaker. Lead was put in every spare forward space as possible.

DSCF8371.JPG.04778933038a196929469f2415d1d055.JPG

A piece of Plastikard was glued between the frames - a good base for the pickup wipers.

DSCF8372.JPG.079eb7358d98461463ca342be6142b12.JPG

Strips of lead were glued to the top side of the plastic.

DSCF8373.JPG.16c88f5f7a499044673077eb461b242d.JPG

At least the engine now balances on its drivers.

DSCF8374.JPG.0061a6173c2744dbf5e9dd75eaa2e3fa.JPG

Somebody has gone to a lot of trouble to make a back-head. When designed, the motor would have come into the cab.

DSCF8375.JPG.b29df42d1e6ce6b732487fe718eefff5.JPG

Next to fit wipers, a paint job and order a decoder.

New wipers have been fitted and extra vac pipes as the loco is motor-fitted. The body was primed and sprayed Halford's matt black this afternoon and just needs the sandpipes fitting and livery applying. Here she is with big sister 2P which I am going to respray as it's very matt.

A decoder arrived for the 2P 0-4-4 Tank. I chose the Webb Coal Tank for the sound as it had more "go" about it than the 1P. First though I got to work on replacing the brake gear.

Left-hand side.

DSCF8378.JPG.39dc17425fa816be6148d9a6eb4a6f53.JPG

Righ-hand.

DSCF8380.JPG.349305ad1d9af8897ab8dd00084b41f4.JPG

It's not right as the brake cylinder and sand box should be the other way round, but there was no way I was going to take the sand box off.

The decoder was fitted to one tank after a printed shelf had been removed. Five tantalums were fitted in the other tank, no need to remove the shelf this side. The sugar cube speaker is in the bunker.

DSCF8381.JPG.c275d3af7222fe9c4c48ec6018c255bf.JPG

Livery applied and brake gear painted underframe dirt. At some point I will try to line it. 6406 didn't arrive at Buxton until BR days as 41406 for the Millers Dale shuttle.

My usually reliable 0-6-0T 3F became very noisy and when I took the body off part of the motor cradle had broken.

DSCF8421.JPG.03fb9cc0f9871a964280d5cbc9f79e9b.JPG

A new one was ordered from Bachmann which arrived in short order.

DSCF8423.JPG.689c02bfde4102f50fcf0110cf0aaeaf.JPG

The brake gear/pick-up part was unscrewed. The cradle was held in by 2 screws.

DSCF8425.JPG.f4451731456b60de5093ee263e265a14.JPG

The motor is a very tight fit in the cradle but then it has to be. While the loco was in bits I cleaned up the gears and re-greased all round. Runs very nicely once again.

Next on the bench is a Clayton Composite Brake Motor Driving Trailer to D526. This is a Stevenson kit I got off Ebay at a price less than RRP. It came complete and with wheels. I don't think the box had ever been opened.

The sides and ends soldered very well. There's a rebate in the cast ends and the side locate into these. There's a half-etched strengthening piece along the tops of the sides which is a nice touch. The roof glues onto these as well.

DSCF8463.JPG.493359c5ee238bf28c231df03f8c922c.JPG

The floor is a piece of double-sided circuit board and it left a vey useful piece for other uses.

DSCF8464.JPG.a164a76a3085c3c049dd91c7131f77d4.JPG

Soles bars and step-boards were added.

DSCF8465.JPG.a444f4f56642cfed605c9a90b812663d.JPG

The brackets were on the step and folded.

DSCF8467.JPG.acfd0b88e3f20c9da2bd35cc7d83374b.JPG

Lower footboards added. I found I used a too short a length so I'll solder a longer one on top later.

DSCF8468.JPG.6f1309e6f93dcd4359061c8e527bed1e.JPG

To finish tonight the queen post was soldered in place with help of 2 guide tabs on the sole bar, then trussing added from 0.5mm wire.

DSCF8469.JPG.1010913518b0a98081e2e1ef81d91a92.JPG

Perhaps more tomorrow.

Very nice looking coach.

Double sided board used to be available from Eileen's when Eileen and Jim owned the business.. I have finally used all of mine up so will have to search out some more.

A little more done today. The bogies are well on their way. I'll put in the step boards later and also the springs to make sure they don't foul the loading gauge. The coach may need to ride higher too.

Back from our break, a lovely few days staying in Rothbury, Northumberland with the obligatory visit to Barter Books in the old station at Alnwick. Looking at old photos of the station area at Rothbury, it would make an interesting bucolic BLT.

All the door furniture on one side has now been fitted. I wish I had done this before soldering to the ends like Comet instructions say.

The interior has been finished apart from painting the coach walls although you cannot see any of it in the photos. The roof has been rolled and lamps and ventilators soldered in place. The instructions say to glue it on with contact adhesive when all is painted.

The building of the motor coach is nearly finished with step-boards in place and the brake gear soldered on. Just the gas cylinders and springs to go. I don't know what other carriage diagrams it was paired with and whether any are available, so it will go with a Ratio lower roofed suburban for now.

Painting has begun with a couple of coats of Halfords' Etch Primer. The bogies have been done with their matt black. The roof is Humbrol grey. I'll let all harden overnight before the end s and sides are painted.

Hi Baz

Not thought about bauxite primer! I don't have any anyway and I would have to go into Lancaster to get some. Annoyingly, my two cans of Phoenix LMS Lake and a Halfords' damask have all run out of pressure, so I have hand painted the sides and don't look too bad. I guess by my time period Clayton motor carriages would have gone anyway and if they had survived would be pretty ropy looking anyway.

Painting is going quite well. Simple lining will be applied, although I doubt any of these carriages saw service with the LMS. I am awaiting Vol 2 of Midland Railway Carriages to be delivered before I can find out their history. The conversion to motor-fitted seems to date from c1903.

The building of the Craftsmen round-top 1P has been picked up today. I'm going for the Johnson-look with this one, although I think the chimney is Deeley.  The kit also come with a fatter chimney in WM but it doesn't look as good as the brass one.DSCF8514.JPG.19de6210baaccffe0c308f596ca535cb.JPG

A few of the last remaining bits and bobs have been fitted to the body superstructure and the cab fittings put in place. I don't know whether the reverser lever is right. The Bachmann model comes with a screw type. A coat of primer next then on to getting the chassis moving. I want to paint out the cab before fixing it in place. The roof will stay loose until a crew arrive.

The 1P has been finished and numbered 1429 a one-time Derby engine which has been photographed on the Peak line on locals. It has a temporary decoder fitted which doesn't take a stay-alive so another will be fitted soon as 0-4-4s are not good at collecting current.

Arrived New Year's Eve, a kit-built loco which was described as an LMS 3F. I knew from the photo something was amiss and it turned out to be a Keyser 2F of Johnson/Deeley era. The loco was well-built but the chimney needed twisting and the cab steps were set outside the frames. The tender was poorly built. As it had been superglued together I gave it a boiling water soak and all fell apart. It's now in paint stripper overnight.

I'm having second thoughts about the glue and a couple of different types may have been used. The loco is now in bits as the brake fluid paint stripper and boiling water has weakened whatever glue was used. It will give me the opportunity to solder the kit together.

"I said I only wanted the steps taken off!!"
