RMweb Gold Popular Post Andy Ross Posted January 8, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 8, 2021 (edited) As requested see below a couple more photos The Tyne and wear unit is 4083 that had collided with a bus on a level crossing. The Green locos are the MOD 0-4-0's The unpainted frame was the last of a stock batch. I think this was eventually delivered to BNFL but I can not be sure. If you are wondering what the round thing is - Its a Greenbatt Circular loom for making hessian sacks. There are actually all four MOD locos in shot - two are obvious with the frame for the third on the welding manipulator in the bottom right of the shot and if you Zoom into the bottom of the shop the forth is on it back. I also thought you may want see how much I am building - before I started designing etches for the structure and the frame I made a 2mm scale mock up - see photos below. David Bell
The mock up is a work of art in itself! 1
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted January 9, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2021 Thank you for all the positive comments over the last week. I am glad i took the time to put the original post up. Hopefully it won't be too long before we get back out to exhibitions with my display. I will continue to add to this for those who are interested. At the moment I am designing the door mechanism and the next will be the welding manipulator - the photo below is of this with one of the BSC Bo - Bo's mounted in it.
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted January 18, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 18, 2021 (edited) For those interested in Irish Narrow Gauge this is how far I have got with the later Bord na Móna locos. The cab roof needed re drawing as it does not fit as it should. I have also redrawn the frame so I can fit wheel sets for a working one on test. The etch drawings are now redrawn but I am waiting to finish drawings for the main erecting shop doors and the brackets etc for the mechanism. I have bought some liner drives of Ebay and it looks like these might work. How it will look when finished and on test. RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted January 24, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 24, 2021 Progress this week - I have gone as far as I can designing the door mechanism. I have done a drawing of a temporary baseboard so I can assemble the lead screws and guides I have bought off eBay that arrived last week. A friend is making the board this week so initial assembly can start. This will be be done with bits of card and plastic before I commit to etches. Erecting shop Side Door Layout-Model.pdf The drawing shows the door layout and the photo shows the real doors. The plan it to also assemble all the structure on this board and then transfer onto the real board when made. All the parts for the structure have already been made. Including the main door beams and columns.
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 3, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2021 This is the test board for the door mechanisms. 8mm lead screws and slides so;d as kit of parts including bearings and bearing blocks from Ebay sold as 3d printer drives. The plastic parts will be replaced with etched versions once the design is sorted. The doors will come down through the slots in the boards and one will slide back before the other. I am also going to assemble all the structure for this section on this board and solder it all up. It will then be transferred to the proper board when built. 7
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 15, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2021 I have started the assembly of the steel-work structure for the doors. This will stay together and will be transferred to the main layout board when it is built. I have also attached a photo showing the real structure. Apart from the spacing of the columns and the height of the crane track I have had to guestimate all the other dimensions for the beams etc. 3 12 3

If the sign "BOILER 3902a" (top right) is related to the boiler, then works number 3902 of 1971 was the very last steam locomotive to be built in Britain for an ordinary commercial concern, a sugar plantation railway in Indonesia. Named Trangkil No 4, it was a 750 mm gauge 0-4-0ST Kerr Stuart "Brazil" class (the same as Premier, Leader & Melior at Sittingbourne and Kemsley, and Excelsior at Whipsnade). The locomotive survives and is now at Statfold Barn, reguaged to 1'11½" gauge. Of course, it could be merely a conicidence, but it looks right. Here is a link to a picture of the locomotive in use in Indonesia: https://www.world-railways.co.uk/general-photo-231 Here's one of it at Statfold: http://sambrandist.blogspot.com/2018/10/driving-trangkil-for-statfolds-first.html 4 1
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 15, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2021 Jeremy I agree that it is the boiler for Trangkil. I had not made the connection with the number on the photo. Thank you for pointing it out. Andy
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 16, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 16, 2021 (edited) So the door assembly may need to be paused as the latest etches have arrived today. These include the reworked Bord na Móna cab and drivers seat assembly. The new frame drawing that will accept wheel sets and motor for the complete loco to go on test. There are also reworked etches for the stillages and benches. These are the prototypes - although they went together ok there were a couple of slots and tabs that did not work as they should but the new ones should be right now . RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 17, 2021 I use PPD in Scotland. Several of us in the Leeds club use them. see https://ppdltd.com They are very helpful and have a reasonable turn around time. Less tha 3 weeks for this batch. The last time I had any etches done (15 years ago if it's a day) I used PhotoEtch in the Midlands. I've got some drawings for some industrial wagons nearing completion, so I'll give PPD a try. RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 27, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2021 (edited) So having previously made frames for the Bord na Móna locomotive for the loco in build I also need to be able to have a fully working version to run up and down the test track. So I re drew it with the chevrons and axle boxes in place. The axle boxes will take a 1/8 axle. This is the etch for the combined buffer and drawgear This is it built up and fitted to the frame. I did build two up but while soldering the first one onto the frame I left the big Iron on the back of the frames for too long and it all moved. I won't be doing that again. I have also built up the fuel tank that sits in the frames. Edited March 12, 2021 by Trams and Locos
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted February 28, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 28, 2021 (edited) So as mentioned above i got the original drawing wrong for the cab roof. The revised drawing has worked a lot better and is now soldered on. The gutters are now separate and they are still tricky to fold so may change them for the future. RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted March 6, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2021 (edited) As well as the Locos for Bord na Móna there were two built for Shotton Steel Works narrow gauge network. It will not be a big job to alter the drawings for these, they are a bit longer. The fuel tank is re positioned to be in front of the cab and a gas conditioner fitted in the space at the front of the frames. The cab and the drivers seat and controls were all the same as the Bode na Mona locos. The only other difference was the track gauge which was 2'6" as against 3'. RMweb Gold Popular Post Andy Ross Posted March 7, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 7, 2021 (edited) More progress with the working version of the Bord na Móna Loco. Even managed to make reasonable representation of the drivers seat that has all the controls on it. The seat still need some more detail adding and I just placed it inside the cab to see what it looked like. The seat still need a couple of controls and arm rests. RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted March 8, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 8, 2021 I have changed the name form Hunslet Engine Works in O Gauge to Hunslet Engine Works in 7mm Scale on the recommendation of a fellow member of the Leeds Club as he rightly pointed out that not all the locos are O Gauge as can be seen by the ones above.

RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted March 11, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2021 (edited) If anyone is interested I am looking to see what the interest might be if I do the Bord na Móna loco as a kit. I have started a new topic for this, if you are please go to https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/163029-interest-in-bord-na-móna-locomotive Andy R Edited March 12, 2021 by Trams and Locos
RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted March 21, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 21, 2021 (edited) Last weekend I managed to draw my first part in 3D to be hopefully 3D printed. See below the air filter housing for the Bord na Móna loco. I don't have a 3D printer (yet) but I have a friend (innocentman) that does who offered to give them a go. Today he dropped them off. So I have dropped one on to the trial assemble and it looks just the part. So i now need to look at the Exhaust silencer and head lights This will make the chances of making this into a kit even better but still a long way to go. RMweb Gold Andy Ross Posted March 27, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 27, 2021 So the other new etches I have are for the benches that run down both sides of the erecting shop. I managed to track down an original bench that was liberated from the site which I used to measure up and produce a drawing. From the drawings i produced etches for three different variants you would find on site. The etches cover two and four draw versions plus I have done one with no draws for the areas were there we cupboards under the benches. These need painting and then wooden tops will need to be fitted. The draws will also need to be locked in as they work at the moment. There will be a lot to make.
