They work quite well but do have an odd “steam-punkish” appearance at the end of a wagon. I have seen pictures of PWA trains with and without brake vans. Did these wagons need brake vans or were they air or vacuum braked? Cheers Darius The clue is in the TOPS code: the last letter specifically. If it's an "A" then air brakes, a "V" then vac brakes, "O" is unbraked and "W" is vac braked but fitted with a through air pipe. 1 2

Mike. They come in various types sizes and lengths so shorter ones are available. The Stenson coupling adaptor that I have used fits a standard NEM pocket so I can change the couplings for shorter ones if required. I have erred on the side of caution at the moment as the wagons will have to negotiate the helix on the shed layout with its vertical and horizontal curved transitions. We can’t test this out until lockdown ends. We have found that tension lock couplings can ride up over each other on the helix (leading to derailments) and that fixed couplings or Kadees perform better. One reason for the presence of a brake van is if there was a lengthy propelling move at the destination. While true, I was only responding to the part of Darius's question about the wagons being air or vacuum braked.

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 13, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 13, 2021 (edited) Primer on. An overall coat of grey primer followed by white primer to the sides. The steel flat weight was superglued to the chassis moulding after the mating surfaces were first sanded down. This avoids the weight coming lose when you reunite the chassis with the body, which from experience is a real pain. Mike. No - strictly speaking I should have but you can’t see that they are not there unless you look really closely. I have some fine plastruct angle section that could be glued in place if need be, however it might interfere with the chassis fitting, which is a tight fit anyway. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 13, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 13, 2021 (edited) Seventh wagon completed. This will be for the end of the rake and I have fitted an LED tail lamp (by TrainTech) along with a screw link coupling and air hoses at one end (no Dalek coupling). This wagon previously sported the fictional Fisons finish. Cheers Darius Edited February 24, 2023 by Darius43 9

Wolf27
The first wagon of my rake of seven PWA's is mostly complete, new buffers and bogies so far. Roof has since been glued into position. I haven't repainted this one as I liked the look of its 37 year natural weathering! Untitled by Shane Wilton, on Flickr cheers Shane
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted January 15, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2021 (edited) Wagon body masked and airbrushed with brown enamel paint. I used a mix of Phoenix bauxite, track colour and black, suitably thinned for airbrushing. Despite smoothing the masking tape (Tamiya) down over the door locking bars etc. there is still a bit of paint bleed. The body will be given a couple of coats of Klear varnish and the paint bleeds “removed” with a small brush and some matt white enamel. Still, never mind eh. Personally I think that these wagons look slightly too narrow but perhaps that’s just me. Cheers Darius
