Coil A, by Accurascale

Going to be totally honest. Ashamed to say I have never come across this type of wagon before (And I thought I had a pretty good knowledge on rolling stock). Going to have to do a bit of further reading up on it’s geographical workings to see if I could legitimately fit some in on my layout.
Initial thoughts are it looks lovely. Very detailed, but I suspect It’s uses maybe a bit more restrictive than previous releases.
Nevertheless, superb that you are tackling these kind of projects.

Whilst I can honestly say "nothing in it for me" as it is out of era, that is a cool looking wagon I didn't know existed and I expect it will do well because it's quirky and I expect given a lot of the other reactions, people won't know they have wanted it until they saw it because they didn't know it existed!

Exactly what my lad said to me when I showed him the painted EP - and he's not a railway modeller (yet)....

I'm not claiming the following are how the models will be finished.

A complex wagon and an interesting addition to 4mm modelling.

Paul

PS they do, of course, share a frame with the MDV - these are the reason why lot 3390 is for 950 wagons and not 1000

That is downright brilliant - no wonder RMweb slowed down a bit (not a lot but a noticeable hesitation opening some pages ;) )    It is slightly too late for my fortunately slightly wonky timescale so I might be tempted because it really is an absolutely superb wagon.

A couple of queries -

1.  Should it not have more than one moveable spacer bar?   I can't answer that as I never had anything to do with Coil As in my working days as a Steel Terminal Manager but most modern coil wagons carried more that one spacer bar.

2. Do the Accuraload coils fit this wagon?  Just thought I'd ask because handling coils (especially hot rolled)  loaded on the roll needed a specialised bit of handling kit which needed space between the coils.

From Pauls excellent site

Quote

The first design of 4-wheel wagon to carry strip coil. Introduced in 1961 50 were built on underframes diverted from the mineral wagons (lot3390)

So is this the same underframe as the MDO/MDV?

Are there any other wagons we can now predict using the same basis?

Looks excellent once again, I'll need to do some research so I can invest in some

Hi Mike,

Each wagon has 3 spacer bars, these will be in a baggie. Unfortunately the Accuraloads coils are too big as they were for the JSAs, so not compatible!

Cheers,

Fran

The sheet on the prototype was, at least in latter days, a form of heavy-duty plastic, without a woven texture, so fabric (unless very finely woven) would look wrong.

I think they were probably plastic on these wagons going back a good way in their lives as they were a special sheet for this type of wagon and plastic sheets were in use by the mid '60s (and possibbly a little earlier).

Is the hood going to be a moulding, or fabric?

Hello Dave, hope you're keeping well? The canopy shewn is merely the first EP plain one, with a more detailed 'lumpy' version currently being worked on...
